I have had a message from one of our young members saying that "a friend" has told her not to eat salt as it is "bad for you".
This sort of attitude has been going on for years, amongst people who should know better.
So let me say this; when a hospitalized patient is too sick to eat or drink, they are given a Saline drip. That's salt water! The patient could be given three to four litres of Saline a day. Each litre of Saline contains six grams of salt.So the patient is being given 18 grams of salt a day to make them better!
Have you got that? 18 grams of salt a day.Far above the normal intake of salt, which is about 8 grams a day.
So is salt bad for you? Ridiculous! Salt has been used in witchcraft healing for thousands of years.
Too much concentration of salt is not good for us.. It can mess with our red blood cells and can end up in high blood pressure. If the concentration of saline water increase or decrease in our blood, our red blood cells can swell up or shrink too.. So yes Salt is important but excess of anything can be bad..
I agree with brysing salt. That story about salt increasing blood pressure is a myth. And about miss lemons comment. Too much of anything is bad. That can be true depending on who you talk to. Star walker where did you get your information? Wherever you did look at different sources to see if they all say the same.
I have had three heart attacks, and so I did a lot of research about heart disease, and high blood pressure; especially about salt. So for the sake of argument I think I should list some of my own sources.
American Journal of Hypertension.
American Medical Association.
Amrican Journal of Medicine.
European Journal of Epidemiology.
Britsih medical Journal.
McMaster University of Canada.
Brysing, you are correct. I have various skin conditions and will bathe with salt. I use a neti pot every morning for my sinuses with salt water in.
My dad has a terrible back and the doctor actually told him to intake more salt for some sort of nerve function.
I think the misconception in linking salt with blood pressure and heart attacks is that a lot of foods which are bad for you contain a lot of salt......they also contain lots of sugar, fat, and bad cholestrol- all of which combine to cause obesity, heart attacks etc.
In my opinion, the salt being present in the food is mere coincidence, it is the other terrible chemicals and fat content which cause health problems, and perhaps an even worse 'demon'- stress!
And stress usually causes people to eat more bad food!
I have many friends who jump on salt fads; no salt, low sodium, only sea salt. Personally I'm not a salt fan [I enjoy sweet things] but I use salt in baths and scrubs a lot, works really well. Also, food wise, can not only preserve, but some meat dishes require you to leave the meat in seasoned salt for a few days to 'cook' instead of using heat. Mind you, as someone who has eaten salted pork and salted cod, I can assure you no amount of boiling will effect that salty taste.
