Now, I don't mean to offend, this is just a thought.
I've seen a lot of people following Loki recently. I mean, I understand. But in the last few months, a lot of my pagan friends have been approached by Loki and asked to follow him, in some way. Or they've suddenly, out of nowhere, had the feeling and deep desire to dedicate alter space and actions to him.
I just have to wonder, given Loki's past actions, if there is a purpose or motive behind this? Or if this is just a coincidence.
If by this you are implying that Loki is trying to hatch some kind of scheme by gathering more followers, than no- I don't agree with that.
A lot of Heathens have noted an increase in Lokeans or people who are interested in Loki within the last few years. Some of it, I believe, is due to the recent interest in Marvel and their portrayal of Loki. Some people have been drawn to him through that exposure: some serious about it, others not. There's a lot of people who have found it to look "cool" to say they work with Loki, much to the unhappiness of the rest of us (we tend to call them "Marveltru"). But there are serious practitioners who have been born from this Marvel exposure as well.
I also think Loki can be more "modern" and appealing in some ways than many other deities. He's gender-fluid, so he appeals more to those who might consider themselves somewhere outside the male/female norm. He's open sexually, again appealing to other demographics. He can be funny and clever, certainly a trickster when he wants to be- which many of the younger generation might be attracted to. He's kind of the "rebel" figure in the Norse pantheon. He's the "outcast", the "lone wolf", the "minority" the "misjudged". To me, it would make sense why a lot of people may identify with Loki or be drawn to him.
In all of my honesty, I fell in love with Marvel Loki rather than Norse Loki when I started honoring him. But I do know the difference between the two.
I used to be romantically attracted to Marvel Loki (Like any fangirl would be) but that faded off into non-existance because of my current relationship with Loki. I see him as my spiritual father.
Norse is one of those paths that confuse me, so my knowledge is limited. That being said, I am aware Loki the God and Loki the character are very different [appearance for example] but the sudden increase is most likely the result of Marvel. It's a blessing and a curse, many are crushing on the actor, but it could lead them to study Norse mythology. Personally I take what people say pertaining to a deities favour with a grain of salt.
Agree with Perce 100%, however, I wouldn't be surprised if Loki had a bit of something up His sleeve,or uses the masses of idiots that think Him and Thor are brothers. ... First sign of a "Marvelian"...lol....
