Runes are a few various alphebets that have been taken fornuse with in magical workings. The most common are elder futhark, younge futherk and ogham. They can be used for anvariety of purposes from divination, to charms. To spell work, to pathworking.

Runes are essentially just a really old form of alphabet and have several forms in which they can be used.

But as a form of magic they have well at least in theory no limit what can be done with them, sealing, enchanting, scrying, and well just about any other form of magic you can think of within reason or course.

The Runes are Germanic, not Celtic like Ogham is. The most common form is the Elder Futhark, which was used as a written langage as well as used in magic (see Galdar/Galdrastafir - incantations and sigils, essentially). They can be cast for lots, but divining with runes is more of a modern construct than a historical one. Bind-runes are also more modern, to my knowledge.

Ragweedforge.com/poems.html lists the Rune Poems, which are the only historical meanings we have of each rune. Everything else concerning the meanings of Runes is based on modern interpretation.

Bind runes being more modern is debatable. There are some of the rune stones that are well dated show a form of bind rune. Bind runes go beyond the making of a single sigil out of multiples. It also goes for the written language.

Two of my favorite books on the Runes, and ones that I think will help you are:

"Taking Up The Runes" by Diane Paxson

"Rune Magick" by Edred Thorsson
