Usually spells for protection and healing work. (If you are doing a healing spell you should also see a doctor if it's bad) but stuff like warewolf transformation and vampire transformation isn't. Stuff you see on tv usually are not real.

if you study the basics of what magick is you will have an easier time figuring out the working and non-working spells. very basic explanation, magick is a natural energy, it only effects energy, and it builds over time to create the subtle changes necessary for your desired goal. spells that effect the physical instantly do not work. read over the spell and ask yourself if it promises the impossible [loose 3 dress sizes over night, grow wings, become invisible]
a quick breakdown though, love, luck, wealth, job, health/healing, curses, blessings, protection, cleansing, are working spells. [provided the ingredients are correct, but thats another matter]
spells for flight, growing wings/tail/ears/anything, gender change, body transformation, become a werewolf/vampire/faerie/mermaid/anything not human, physical teleportation, levitation, invisibility, physical time travel, and basically anything you've seen in a movie is not real because magick can only effect energy.
there are also a handful of grey areas in magick you should avoid until you understand it better. beauty spells work but it depends on the individual spell. a spell promising instant, overnight results does not work, but something to help speed results usually does because you are combining the energy of magick, with herbs known to help with your issue [acne, oily hair, weight loss] and your own efforts [new face/hair cleaning routine, diet/exercise] to bring the change. death spells are seen by some as a powerful curse [therefore work] but others see it as too much power for a mortal to possess [therefore fake] and weather spells, similar to death spells, the 'pro' crowd sees it as natural, and effecting nature [working] but others again view it as too much power for one person [non working]
again, educate yourself on magick to help yourself with casting [because while belief is needed, it takes more than that] and you will spot fakes better. example, love spells are real, working spells, but herbs carry different energies, and someone might of put in a bunch of items used in wealth spells, not love spells, causing the energy to be muddled and not work.
