Yes. Vodou is largely a community initiation based religion. While non-initiates can do certain things in the house/society and at home, it's not completely solitary, and one needs some communication to a community/clergy for guidance.

Personally, I strongly believe in the community aspect because it's how Vodou was formed.

And what do you do when you living in Boondock Louisiana, and are miles from other practitioners and only have the internet sites like this one to learn from and books for example The Haitian Vodou Handbook: Protocols for Riding with the Lwa by Kenaz Filan ,and his other two books on Vodou to go on?

It is a intiation based religion, you will experiance more and probably know a lot more while belonging to a house that practices Vodou. Other than just being a "Bokor" which is a term used for non initiated solo practioners and refers initiates that practice black magic.

I hate when a person practices vodun is considered to tied to only black magic. Idealistically the idea implies that someone who practices and chooses to be ostracized can only be classed as a "shaman for hire" or black magic user. The idea that mambo or houngan is the opposite is also ridiculous.

Vodou is a religion that is practiced by initiated people. But some who weren't initiated have been able to learn about it and practice it. The best thing to do if you're looking to learn find someone willing to teach you openly if you don't want to be initiated into a group.

Vel, nobody indicated that Vodou is only black magick. You made that connection by misreading my comment.

Sim,I know enough to know that even the non-initiated can work with and serve the Loa,and they don't have to work with the left hand if they don't want to.

Let me rephrase myself to pour over some clarification (again), the term Bokor is a term that is used to describe solo practictioners and also a refrence to the Bokors that do very well in fact practice with more the petro lwa. And I never stated once that you can't be non - initiatied. If you would take the time to read my post it would do you some good.

And for more clarification they call it "hot and cold" not the westernized "left and right".
