I thought I'd add a chunk of information on dragon magick into the forum because I'm not council so I can't add it to articles. I hope someone reading this learns something because there are a lot of misconceptions about it.
Dragon magick (also known as draconian magick, draconic Wicca and other) is the act of using the power of a dragon in your spell work. The main deities in dragon magick are: Fafnir- ruler of the fire element, Naelyon- ruler of the water element, Grael- ruler of the earth element and Sairys- ruler of the air element. All dragons come under the ruling of at least one of these dragons except Chaos dragons. They are dark entities which rampage the astral realm.
Dragons are only in their physical form in a certain frequency of the astral realm. In the mundane realm (the normal world) they are spirits.
The way one thanks a dragon for its help is to make an offering. They can be a complicated ritual or just as simple as burying a coin (dragons love coins)
I don't want to add too much information so I'll stop here but if you have any questions please mail me. And if I don't reply my communication limit was probably reached :P
Dancing with dragons is a good book indeed, even if it is a hot-swap of replacing the usual gods of the corners with dragons. It is an excellent starting point, especially for people who already have a little magic under their belt and want to work with Dragons in a magical/ritual setting. They can be a source of a lot of strength and wisdom.
Just keep in mind that when calling on dragons this way, it is more accurate to say you are calling on a primal elemental force through a draconic archetype. You aren't calling on individual dragons so much as their idea, image, and strength.
After all Fafnir was a dwarf who was cursed to be a dragon for his greed in the Norse tales. Yet using the name as the representation of the primal element of draconic fire does not become diminished or demeaned. This is because you are not drawing on the memory of that legend. It has become synonymous with dragons and fire and so that name invokes those archetypes, and that archetype is what you are calling. Of course like the other evoking names, it can and does catch the attention of individual draconic beings along with the energy, who might come poking around to see what the hubub is about.
Speaking of Dragons as beings; By nature, dragons tend to operate individually, so I have found that if you are interested in connecting with them, gaining the respect and friendship of a single dragon who has introduced itself to you tends to be more valuable than calling on multiple archetypes.
It isn't that Dragons are territorial with each other or unable to work together or anything, they just send to prefer working on a one-on-one basis. So don't be too surprised if after you start using Draconic magic and/or working with Draconic energy, one in particular starts making itself more and more known to you and may introduce itself.
As beings of energy and magic, usually one or two will gravitate towards you who have a natural draw or synchronicity. Ones who have compatible attitudes and methods, or particular lessons they can teach to you tend to be the ones to hang around and can become guides or guardians.
When this happens, it is good to spend some time learning who the dragon is. Their personality, what elements and colors they associate themselves with, even how and when they draw on their energies. Those things can be reflective of your own nature as well. If a dragon introduces itself into your life, it is as much a totem animal and guide as it is a potent assistant with your magic.
For the "Too long, Didn't read" crowd;
Dragon energy is old, primal, powerful, and intrinsically tied with the elemental forces. It is good to use, but don't be surprised if you make some new friends as you explore the practice.
Not a bad start but there's a few points I'd like to add,
The biggest one is Chaos Dragons. They are not good or evil, they are chaotic energy. I've met a few and some are calm others are energetic, what makes them Chaos Dragons is there energy, anything is possible. You call on them for a spell and they can affect the past, present or future with their energy to bring it to fruition. They have no rules. [And that's the hardest thing for me dealing with them]
D.J. Conway isn't the best source but it is one of the only sources on Dragon Magick since most practitioners keep to themeseves and don't give out information to strangers. It is wise to use her book as a guideline and not a "how to" [the most helpful thing I got out of her book was the guided meditation]
If you wanted to study more there's a closed coven for Dragon Magick that could help you as well as several threads on this topic in the Other Path section that can be of help to your studies.
Some of the Dragon magic articles and links in the ebon-dragon site are broken, after some digging I finally found the article I was looking for a while ago Luckily I found it featured on a different site;
In general, J'Karrah is a very good source of information regarding Dragons and their Ilk. J'karrah has been a part of the communities for years and years and has been connected with dragons for all of that time.
