Hermes is a god of sleep, dreams, trickery, divination, hospitality, guile, humor, memory, learning, languages, writing, crafty wiles, trade and merchants. He is also an inventor and protector of travelers. Oh, and guides the souls of the dead to Charon as well.
Homeric Hymn 4 to Hermes 16 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C7th to 4th B.C.) :
"She [Maia] bare a son [Hermes] . . . a bringer of dreams, a watcher by night."
