Personal Power Animal

I was wondering about Personal Power Animals. I know that the term Totem animal is commonly reserved for those who are apart of the Red path and or are Native American themselves. However with the 21st century totem is kinda just thrown all over the place. But with a Personal Power Animal, is it almost the same concept as it being the part of your soul/spirit in animal form?
If so, does that mean that you can work with it and let it teach you to better yourself?

A Power Animal can be helping you for some time until you have completed the thing it was trying to help you with or they can be helping you your whole life. They can also help you better yourself. They can contact you trough physical means (signs like stones, and other objects that can mean something). Or they can contact you via spiritual means (dreams, astral projection, etc.). You can indeed work with them.
