I was talking to a friend today and he had a stroke and now suffers from horrible migraines... He is currently on Oxycontin, which he hates, and gas tried oils and such but nothing is helping his migraines... Any ideas on things he can do to help them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

His doctors can't even figure out what is causing them.

I know this sounds odd but has he tried eliminating certain items from his diet? Certain people who suffer from migraines and many other ailments of unknown cause have been helped by tweaking their diet in different ways. For some people (myself included) eliminating dairy changed their lives, for some people taking out cane sugar & corn syrup, and for some it is removing gluten (this is separate from a different gluten disorder called celiac). Tell him to give it a shot for a little while. It can't hurt anything, and if it doesn't work then he can just go back to eating normally. If he tries it, tell him to only exclude one food type at a time for at least a few weeks so by process of elimination he can find the problem food (If there is one). If the ailment stops when a food is taken out, stick with that diet!

I'll tell him that... But like I said... His doctors ate stumped.... He can't hear out of one ear and get the migraines for seemingly no reason whatsoever...

Unfortunately migraines are little understood. There are many kinds and many causes that can range from a food allergy or stress/emotional tension to being a form of siezure or other cerebrospinal disorder.

If the migraines and hearing loss started after the stroke occurred then it is logically a contributer if not the outright culprit. The doctors should at least have some information on the stroke, where the damage is, and what neurological systems would have been affected. That would be a good starting point.

I would suggest your friend start a journal in a small flip book that he can kaap with him. The instant he gets the first warning signs that a migraine is going to start, he should write down the exact time, his current activity, the lighting, where he is, his emotional state (worried, relaxed, stressed, laughing, whatever) Any smells or foods nearby, any chemicals or cleaning products he has been exposed to in the last hour, and anything he has eaten in the last two hours.

After getting at least a dozen entries review the journal and compare the entries looking for any details that are common among all (or at least almost all) of the entries. At the very least it will be information to help the doctors in understanding his triggers. The solution might be as simple as getting some polarized glasses to protect against the flicker of indoor lights and computer screens.

Ok I just talked to him and I realized I was wrong... He gets very painful chopping noises in his head that he says is like having a tree grinder going in his head. He says that all his docs know is that it is in sync with carotid pulse.... He gas tried a lot of things to get rid of or help his pain, like oils, relaxation, etc.... I'm basically just asking for ideas to help his pain at least... Maybe some fresh ideas are needed.
