You go to the persons profile and click "Mail" after you wrote your message you click 'send' and they will receive it and see it when they log back on if they are offline.
You go onto their profile, and use the mail tab on their profile (not the one next to the sign out button) and type your message.
This will send a mail directly to their profile without them having to send you one first.
