I am looking for different ways to be able to contact a deity and work with them. I know they have to approach you, but is there a way to open yourself up to communicating with them?
I have been doing wicca for over 5 years, but recently I have felt myself really drawn to deity work and I can't explain it. So I am looking for any reliable resources to start working with deities and making sure that it isn't a trickster entity.
I have always been drawn to Egyptian and Norse mythology if that helps, and Greek mythology. But I am really not sure where to go from here. Deity work is brawn new to me, and I have seen people use tarot cards (Is that recommended??)
I might not be of much help here, but you can always start by approaching them first. Politely ask them for their aid in your spell, and leave an offering as a thank-you-in-advance. Build up a relationship with them if they agree to help you, since you are essentially a stranger to them. I also recommend you research any deities you may be drawn to, as a way to understand them. This will help you understand what offerings they like, their personality, what kind of things they rule over, and more.
If you feela deity has chosen you, you can make a call to the universe, asking for a sign. I'd do a little ritual for this; before going to sleep, light a candle, get into a meditative state, and send out a request for signs in any form you like. Record your dreams for the next week or so, and if you feel you've seen reoccurring symbols or themes, do some research to see who they're affiliated with.

I my path with Wicca, after a year, I began calling on deities. The first two I worked with were the two I deities liked the most, Sobek and Bast [I studied Egyptology as a hobby growing up] I had an altar in my bedroom, so I decorated half with things associated with Sobek and the other half for Bast. I introduced myself to them, explained why I wanted to work with them, and for them to give me a sign if they wanted to work with me. Over time, I moved away to work other deities of other pantheons. Nothing really went beyond surface level, but the approach was the same [create an altar, introduce myself, wait for a sign, work with them on the full moon only] but the turning point for me was Sekhmet.
I got into an "edgy" phase and thought I would work with the awesome Sekhmet [like Bast, but cool] So I did the same thing, made my altar all lions and red and introduced myself. She was the first to come to me while I was meditating and basically went "I'm going to stop you there. If you seriously want to work with me, you're going to actually put in the effort to work with me." Long story short, I was naive and didn't think things through. I agreed and began working with her more than the others, but I never held up my end of the bargans. Eventually, she threw up her hands and said I was too immature and she would be back after I did some growth.
Skip ahead seven years and I'm wanting to work with deities for real. I did the whole altar thing, but this time, instead of simply picking deities at random, I researched. I reflected on what signs I saw [repeating patterns, drawn to certain subjects/things, interests, as well as my genealogy] I began researching deities associated with bears and while scrolling, the word Artio seemed to stand out in compared to the other words [which happened when I discovered Wicca] I researched her and felt this spark inside. So, I decorated my alter for her, introduced myself, and waited. The next day, I said my morning blessing as well as stopping by my altar to light a candle and say hello [something I never did in the past] and went about my day as normal. That afternoon, while I was on lunch, the room became brighter somehow, and I felt someone hug me. I felt overjoyed and light and warm and I knew it was Artio. A few weeks later, I was at my favourite occult shop, checking out their deity statues when I found one of Cernunnos and I felt that same spark.
So, I began working with the two of them. I created an altar for both of them, lit a candle and incense every day in their honour and left a glass of water and food offering. I began praying to them daily too. Prayer seems to be an overlooked part of Pagan practice. You can read off a template [like a chant or blessing] but just talk to them. Say hi, thank them for your blessings, then talk like you're catching up with a friend. You might find meditation music and chants for the specific deity you wish to work with online you can play while meditating [I've have deities approach me while meditating or in my dreams]
I had been working with Artio and Cernunnos for about three years when I began noticing signs again. I would be in online Pagan groups, and they would post pictures of Sekhmet, or my news feed would have articles about her, or people would post flashcard games and when I stopped them it would land on Sehkmet. I also own the Goddess Guidance oracle deck, and Sekhmet kept popping out of it. Honestly, I was nervous this time because I was in a good place, and was worried it would be a bad thing to work with a "dark goddess" so I ignored the signs. She would come to me in meditations, and I actually told her "thanks for the offer, but I'm good" and she just nodded and said "no, you're mine" [referring to the idiotic move from my teens when I dedicated myself to her. I haven't dedicated myself to any other deities, and I recommend you don't either without a lot of thought and understanding of the deity beforehand] So, the signs kept coming, and after listening to a podcasts where one of the host gushed about how much she loved working with Sehkmet, I threw up my hands and said "okay, if this is seriously Sekhmet, give me a sign in my dreams to prove it's really her" That night, I dreampt I was in Egypt, being chased by a lioness with a red dot on her forehead. I somehow knew if I reached the Nile, I'd be safe, but before reaching it, a cobra wrapped around my left leg. I woke up with a cramp in my left leg and a figure pacing at the foot of my bed. I clearly heard "you will work with me now. You belong to me" and I went "yes ma'am" So, that's how I started working with Sehkmet again. [don't worry, she's calmed down, I can be stubborn sometimes, so occasionally, I need some tough love] I recommend being observant, even now I see signs from my deities, like a snake will stop and observe me, or a picture of a bear catches my eye. I hate to say "you just know" but there's a feeling like "this is special" when working with a deity, so keep track of when you feel energy shifts.

There is a wonderful book by Judy Harrow called " Devoted to You" which discusses things such as developing a connection to a deity, creating a relationship with them, and ways to go about honoring and working with a deity. I highly recommend it.
I have a connection with many deities and I'm quite experienced in deity work . This is how i developed a connection .
I started out by worshipping them , chanting their mantras and hymns and giving them offerings .
Next i started channeling to connect with them . For channeling, i first cleansed myself with a salt bath , then a session of grounding and centering , and then i reached out to them . I got into a meditative state and focused on the deity , calling them to respond. The call has to be respectful and full of devotion . I kept calling patiently .
Now , how do i know they have answered ?
When the deity has heard my call , i will have a heart filling or throat filling sensation . This is a sign that the connection is established . Now , if i have a wish , then i can state it to the deity and if i have a question then also i may ask. I will get an answer popping out of nowhere in my mind . To know if the wish will be fulfilled or not , pay attention to the numbers you encounter everyday . If you see a multiples of eleven to often then know that it will be fulfilled. Before coming out of the meditative state , thank and offer glory to the deity for hearing your call. This meditation has to be done in a completely silent area where you are not disturbed .
Do this constantly and you can develop a good relation. Also know the nature of the deities and say the words that favour them and their behaviour .
Hope this helps!
Blessed be!
