Like with anything you arebuilding, consider the process of what you want to accomplish first, then build the spell around that. It also helps to consider what you are looking for protection from, as there can be little nuances that can tweak and influence how you go about your task to make it more targeted/effective.
There are many practices out there. Many ways to create protection or banish away that which is not desired. However, once you strip things away to the bare bones, the formula if you will, there is a definable process you can base everything around which is common among most (if not all) sources. My own studies have brought out a personal 'inside-out, topside-down' approach.
Begin with the self. Prepare, meditate, contemplate. What are you protecting from? Why do you feel you need that protection? What has drawn the issue to you? Learn from your situation, become better through it.
Cleanse the self. Physically bathe. Moon/sun bathe. Let the light wash through you and carry away negativity. Channel, call on a guide/guardian, or use crystals depending on your practice to ask for help.
Empower; Perform a personal sacred ritual or circle and call for guidance and protection from the entities or gods you work with. Give thanks, give offerings, affirm your Self and your Authority.
Clear the space; Carry your prepared self into the home and go room by room. Wall by Wall. Window/door by window. Start at the top floor. Walk a circle around the room and bring blessings to each Wall corner to corner. Define that negative energy is released from the house. Define that negative intent is barred from your walls. Fill the space with the strength of yourself and your helping forces. Use incense that is mild but present to mark the air of each room. Sandalwood, Dragon's blood, Lavender, cedar, sage, sweet grass, all are fine choices.
Do each room in turn. Walls, windows, closets, door, next room. Do the same through the entire home from the top to the bottom. Kitchen, living room, storage spaces, laundry room, everywhere. Be patient, thurough, and methodical. Once the last Wall of the last room is complete, carry your eviction to the main door. Open the door, as if showing out an unwelcome guest. Close the door firmly and Physically lock it. It does no good to kick out what is unwelcome only to leave the door swinging in the breeze.
Now empower your space as you empowered yourself. Welcome the guides and protectors, those gods or entities you trust and follow. Ask them to help define your threshold. Affirm the rules of your space in simple but specific language.
"Let no ill intent dwell within these walls. All shadow be banished from my palace of light." (Or something similar, state what resonates with you.)
Release and give thanks; Express your gratitude to those positive beings who joined you in your task. Thank them for their presence, bid them farewell. Their task is done.
Finally, maintain; Be aware of yourself and your actions. Do not purposefully call in or call on negativity. Bring positive things into your space that bring happiness. Funny quotes, happy slogans, wise words. Bright art, healing or affirmative items for your altar. Maybe a plant or two to bring in green, growth, life, and something to actively care for.
Perform these things together with a genuine intent and conviction would go a very long ways.
