Cast a circle, and sit in the middle, with your candles in front of you. Make sure your candles are in the circle with you. Light each candle. Pray to your gods/goddess for protection
This requires an edit. This can work, but you do not need multiple candles. You could carve family or friends into a single candle. You could also use a photo. You could also imagine them. Charge the candle with energy and think about those you wish to protect. Once you light it, imagine a protective aura around them as it burns. As for pray to your god/goddess firstly, not everyone works with deities. Secondly, if you ask your deities for help, it is wise to give them something in return. You should just chant protect those I love from harm since you are telling the Magikal energy what your goal is. That would give the energy a charge, which is key to a spell to work. As for the thirty minute timeframe, I would go with what feels best. If you are protecting dozens of people, more time would be required to cast correctly. It will also drain you, especially if you are new to spellcasting, so you should focus on one or two and recast over time. The casting will last as long as the candle is burning. You could put it out and recast over several nights to charge more energy, but you should prepare to do your casting for as long as the candle burns.
