I understand the purpose, but it is a flawed spell. There is little need to leave it for that long unless you are not charging any Magikal energy and are simply relying on the natural energy of the herbs and crystal. In that case, you are not casting a spell but making fancy potpourri. Take the herbs and the crystal and cup your hands around the bowl and charge the entire thing with energy. Write or Google a protection chant and say it. You could also burn a white or black candle as you do this. When you feel it is fully charged, place the contents, herbs and all, into a white or black drawstring bag and hang it above your doorway. You can even use the gold string to tie it with as it has correspondences with abundance, happiness and solar energy among other.

IN addition to what Tadashi said, I wouldn't recommend placing crystals in salt or water unless you're absolutely certain that the crystals won't be damaged. Even if a crystal is hard enough to withstand water, salt may damage it or its polish (if polished).

That is correct. Research the crystal. You can cleanse items in a variety of ways, but be sure they are safe for the specific item. You can charge crystals in sunlight, but it can be harmful for certain ones. Selenite for example will dissolve in water.
