Latin Name: allium vineale

Planetary Ruler: Mars

Element: Fire

Magical Properties:

Garlic is associated with the magical properties of protection, healing, strength, endurance, and speed.

If you carry a clove of garlic in your pocket while traveling on water it is supposed to help prevent you from drowning. Peeled garlic cloves can be hung above the entrance to your home or buried in your home to keep evil away or prevent it from entering your home. Some parents have even placed a clove of garlic under their child's pillow to keep them protected while sleeping.

If you are trying to ward of an ex or unwanted lover/spouse you can cross two pins and place them in a clove of garlic. Bury the garlic at a crossroads then get the individual to cross the buried garlic clove. Legend has it that they will lose interest and leave you alone.

Carrying garlic with you or eating it are said to increase speed, strength, and endurance. In the past, soldiers carried garlic with them for this particular purpose. It was also given to slaves because it was thought to ward of illness and disease.

If you have a cut or bruise, rubbing a clove of cut garlic over it and then placing the clove under running water is thought to wash away the wound or sore.

Medicinal Uses:

Garlic contains Allicin which acts as a mild antibiotic, similar to a weak penicillin. Cooking the garlic weakens its antibiotic properties, however.

It can be used on sores, cuts, viruses, colds, flues, issues with kidneys, the bladder, ear aches, worms (in both humans and animals) and blood problems such as high blood pressure.

If taken internally, garlic can be taken in cloves along with basil or mint to help combat garlic's strong odor. You can also make a tincture by soaking pound of peeled and chopped garlic cloves in a quart of brandy. Place them in an airtight container and shake everyday. After two weeks, strain and bottle the mixture. Take 25-30 drops of this a day.

You can make a garlic cough suppressant for the flu or respiratory issues by taking 1lb of garlic and peeling and slicing it. Pour boiling water over it and let it sit twelve hours. Then add sugar until it turns into a syrup. You can then add honey to give it a better flavor.

For a sore throat, place garlic cloves in a half a cup of boiling water. Let it set over night and then drink it the next morning.

For an earache, peel a clove of garlic and heat it in virgin olive oil. Allow it to cool then strain it and use a few drops in the affected ear.

Garlic Treatments: Keep in mind that herbal remedies shouldn't be used in place of modern medicine.

  • Inhaling the vapors from steamed garlic can help cure respiratory problems.
  • Garlic Infusion: Can improve circulation, draw abscesses, and relieve inflamed joints. To make an infusion, cut 6 cloves of fresh garlic and add to 1 cup of cool water. To make a weak infusion, steep the mixture for 10-15 minutes. For a strong infusion, steep for 6 hours. This can be used in compresses and rinses.
  • Garlic Tincture: This can help prevent influenza and other stomach problems. To make a tincture, soak a half a pound of peeled garlic cloves in 1 bottle of brandy at 85 degrees Fahrenheit, in an airtight bottle for 2 weeks. Shake the bottle several times each day. After the two weeks are up, strain the tincture and return it to the bottle for storage in the refrigerator. Take 6-20 drops daily after every meal.
  • Garlic Oil: Place 10 pieces of sliced garlic into a 1 quart jar of olive oil. Allow the contents to stand for 1 week before straining through a coffee filter. Pour the oil into a labeled bottle and then seal it shut.
  • Garlic Ointment: Mix one and a half cups of garlic oil with 1 ounce of beeswax. Put the oil and wax into a heat-proof jug, place in a large pan, and place the pan on the stove. Add water to the pan until the level is slightly below that of the contents of the jug. Bring the water to a boil and then turn the heat down to a simmer. Stir the contents of the jug with a metal spoon until the wax melts and fuses with the oil. Remove the jug from the pan and turn off the heat. Place the jug on a heat-proof surface to cool. Before the ointment begins to set, pour it into clean jars. Don't cover or seal the jars until the ointment has completely cooled and sets. Once it has cooled and set, label the jars with the date and content then seal them shut for later use.
  • Garlic Flu Brew: 1 large tsp sliced garlic, 1 tsp. of chopped ginger, 1 tbsp raisins, a half tsp crushed aniseed, and 1 dash of brandy. Simmer these ingredients with the juice of one or two lemons in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. This can help prevent colds and the flu.

Side Effects: The odor can linger on the breath and seep through the pores. To help with this, eat basil thyme or mint when eating garlic.

Individuals with allergies to garlic, chives, leeks, and onions shouldn't eat or handle garlic. Pregnant women, those with sensitive stomachs and skin also shouldn't handle or consume large amounts of garlic.
