Making of a wand

A wand (also: magic wand) is a thin, straight, hand-held stick or rod made of wood, stone, ivory, or metals like gold or silver. Generally, in modern language, wands are ceremonial and/or have associations with magic but there have been other uses, all stemming from the original meaning as a synonym of rod and verge, both of which had a similar development. A stick giving length and leverage is perhaps the earliest and simplest of tools. Long versions of the magic wand are usually styled in forms of staves or scepters, often with designs or an orb of a gemstone forged on the top.(1)

The most common of simple common use wands are made from willow root.  All wands should be at least 10 inches long and up to 3/4 in diamater at the hilt.  

You then have speciality wands

Oak (red):   Most powerful and sacred of the druid woods.  Oak is one of the longest lived trees trees, thus emodying wisdom as well as strength.  Best for focus, opening or sealing doors, authority,wisdom, and or abundance.

Copper wands:  These healing wands are primarily used to cleanse, energize and balance the etheric field within and surrounding the body. When the etheric body is healthy the physical body has a much easier time becoming healthy. Powered by: 

Ash  One of the few surviving Druid wands of old, found in an archeological dig, was made of Ash with a sunwise spiral design, symbolizing Ash's links to the Sun.The Ash appears in Norse myth as Yggdrasil, the World-Ash or Tree of Life from which all the worlds spring. In this respect it is the pathway or bridge by means of which the wizard may travel among the worlds. Poseidon, Odin, and Thor each wielded a spear of Ash, symbolic of an irresistible magical Will and invincible protection. The Greek goddess Nemesis carried an ash wand as symbol of divine justice. With it, she ensures that fortune is shared among all people and not only by the few. In Celtic Mythology, the Ash was sacred to Gwydion as a tree of enchantment. It links the three worlds of existence - Past, present, and future. It symbolizes a key to the understanding how all things are linked and connected. The Ash was used in Scotland to protect children from sorcery.
