you're on the right track. but you may need to start again is all. wands, to me anyway, are one of the items you should make, not buy. [if the sticks hold meaning ignore the first step] first, find a tree you feel a connection with. it could be a tree in your yard, or maybe in a park. find a tree, meditate under it, and see if you can feel anything. if you feel positive energy, then you ask the tree if you may take a branch. once you receive your answer, leave an offering for the tree as thanks [water with plant food works] and cut off a branch. don't go for too big, around the length of your elbow to your fingertip works [you'll be losing a bit in the widdling]
once you take it home, you can begin making your wand. as you carve it, think about what you'll be using the wand for, what it will help you with, all the good it will do, what it'll look like when it's done, that sort of stuff. you can also decorate it with feathers, patterns, stones so on. some people will varnish them, or paint them, whatever feels right for you.
at the next full moon, purify it. it'll be ready for use then. it takes time, and work, but it pays off in leaps and bounds, because you have a connection with the tool, you've filled it will your energy alone, and it will reap more powerful magic than a generic wand mass produced. [though sometimes it's ok to buy one, like if you want a metal wand with crystals in it or something.]
