I'm sorry but this is not entirely correct. Pendulums can work by channeling the over soul, spirit guides, ancestors, etc. but that does not mean that a pendulum will only work for questions concerning you personally. The human body is able to pick up on universal energies (spirit guides, ancestors, etc.), and then channel these energies into a medium (the pendulum) that we are able to understand. Just like any other form of divination, pendulums can be used to answer questions concerning other people.

Pendulums can be just as effective for giving readings a tarot cards or other forms of divination, the only drawback is that pendulums are slightly limited in what they can communicate. I will agree that giving a reading over the internet, especially for people you have never met before, may cause your readings to be less effective/accurate.
How To Expand Beyond "Yes/No" Questions:
As you know Oliva, pendulums can be used to answer "yes" or "no" questions. However, you can also use what is known as a pendulum chart to expand the capabilities of a pendulum. Basically, you can print out a chart (or draw one yourself) which has different answers or different degrees of yes/no. You place the pendulum over the chart, and after asking the question you look at in which section the pendulum is swinging. Here is a beginner chart you can print out if you wish to try:
