Yes, you can make yours out of wood. They are as good as the ones you can buy too; however, I think they are better. If you know how to make one, you are using your hands (one of your greatest tools for you) and you are putting your own energy and effort into creating it. Since you are putting your own energy to it then you may feel and have a better connection with it. It may take money for the supplies if you do not have them.
If you cannot make an athame, there are plenty of other alternatives. You could use a wand, a pencil, or anything else that you see fit to direct energies with. You can even use your finger.
