Sun & Moon

The sun and moon have watched over mankind and our many civilizations since the dawn of time. There is a multitude of conceptions and perspectives about them, and religions and belief systems centered around the two. This is more of a discussion topic as opposed to an article. If you'd like to reply, your thoughts are valued.

  • What does the sun/moon mean to you?
  • Do you incorporate either into your practices?
  • What are some contrasting points of one another?
  • Do you get any peculiar feelings from the sun/moon?
  • Is there any favouritism for one or the other?
  • If the sun/moon could speak a short paragraph, what do you think they would say?

Feel free to add, subtract, or change any of the discussion prompts.

God bless,

Spiritus Servum

I've always found the celestial bodies to be the most sacred and beautiful. The sun is empowering and gives me strength and health. I live in a desert where I can only enjoy the sun 3 months out of a year, because otherwise it's too hot to even breathe. During those three months, however, I harness it's energy often.

The moon is mysterious, ever-changing, and a guardian of the night. At night, the darkness limits our physical sight and heightens our other senses, our imaginations, and our ability to let go of what we perceive as a stagnant or unchanging reality. Depending on the phase of the moon, a spell can host various degrees of strength. I love casting spells by the light of the full moon, or sometimes even by harnessing the energy of the full moon.

I definitely find the sun to be infinitely more fascinating and beautiful then the moon. The moon gains its light by reflecting the light of the sun. Sol is a power source that is millions of years away from being depleted. I feel that if we can unshackle our perceptions of realty that we have during the day and harness the power of the sun for magic, it may be much stronger than lunar spells.

"I am your shepherd, your light, your protector. The universe is a cold, dark place and I can't let you wander it alone, doomed to freeze and crumble in the darkness. You dance in circles around me, twirling, spinning. You, little earth, are my child. I will never abandon you. I will keep you safe and warm. I am your father. I am Sol." - The Sun

"You needn't fear the darkness, little ones. I may not be Sol, but I have enough light to help you see in the dark. I lend you my energy each night. And even though you can't always see me, I am always here. I push and pull the tides for you. I am the force of change. I am Luna." - The Moon

The sun and moon symbolise everything to me, to some degree. It represents dark and light, good and evil, male and female, hot and cold, emotions, memories. There isn't anything else on this world I feel more connected to then the heat of the sun or the glow of the moon.

I've incorporated both into my practice numerous times, mostly in ritualistic work though I have cleansed items underneath one or the other, and I believe the two have two different types of energy, but they are the same as well.

The sun makes me feel alive, energetic, and drained. The moon brings me to a different life. It makes my thoughts slower, more heavy, almost in a drunken way but they are often deep thoughts that no drunken man could conjure up.

I tend to prefer the moon for it inspires me, breathes and old world to me, and I am an insomniac.

I think if either of them could speak, they both could; not one or the other. I think they would speak of what they have seen and their constant and neverending struggle with one another. They would speak of the beauty and and darkness that has lifted and befallen the worlds.

To me they are the Lord and Lady, the Son and Daughter of the Heavens and Earth.

Lord Solaris is the name I attribute to Helios, also known to the Romans as Sol Invictus, a point of infinite bestowal of Light (Nuclear Radiance), Life (Energy for Photosynthesis and Warmth of the Planet), and Love (Graviational Attraction which counterbalanced with the Moon creates the Ebb and Flow of the Tide and grants form to the World). To me He is the son of Ouranos, the Heavens, and through Him our world was made possible. I work with Him as a being to the South, a being of Cosmic Fire.

Lady Lunaria is the name I attribute to Selene, also known to the Romans as simply Luna, the epitome of feminine grace and mysterious majesty. She is the most humble of the Classical Planets, and is Lady of the Waters of the World. She is the Daughter of Gaia, born from the womb of the still forming Earth through the sacrifice of an unknown planetary object to form the shape of the Earth, its axial tilt (on average 23.5 degrees), and the Silver Lady of the Night, our Moon. She is always receptive to the light of the Sun, Her lover in my view, and yet She also carries a mystery about Her with a side that no one can see, putting Her best face forward for all the world to see. Her role in the tide is essential for the Eb and Flow of the Tides of the World, and through Her we are able to have the balance of land and sea on Earth. As it was said before, She is the Daughter of Gaia and Consort to the Lord of Fire, making Her the Lady of the West as a being of Celestial Water.

With the two of them I worked with Ouranos the Heavens as the Father to the East of Heavenly Air, and with Gaia the Earth as the Mother to the North of Terrestrial Earth.

These beings to me represent something similar to what was said before, they are the epitomes of Yin and Yang, Masculine and Feminine, and also the Revelations of the Light and the Mysteries of Darkness.

I always use the sun and moon in my spells to add an enchantment to it. I will put a potion or some crystals in my window seal to add the power of sun and moon. I favorite the sun because my zodiac is a leo and its planet is the sun. The sun and moon effect different people but the sun helps heal my eczema on my skin and helps my bones not be sore. I can feel the energy and my body absorbs it. The sun is powerful and so is the moon, and they watch over our planet like a guardian. I think it helps us in many ways and could heal many sicknesses.
