I suggest learning about various styles of meditation and their techniques. Meditation is used to focus your thoughts and emotions, to become consciously aware and mindful of them. It also helps to learn grounding and visualization techniques when trying to focus and direct energy and emotions into a spell.
Some Various links on meditation and principles of magic. I suggest reading these articles as they may be of some help to you and your goals.

Thanks. I actually suspected meditation would be helpful, but I was afraid trouble with concentration would hinder that also. I will have a look at the above links.

Attention span and concentration are learnt skills. We have limited attention span, focus and concentration. If our short-term memory, working memory and senses are overloaded it is matter of time that you just space out to relieve the sensory load and the amount of processing.
The most important thing to do is to minimise all distractions.
Well trained mind can do that automatically. Not so trained mind should physically minimise them. For example, switch off your smart phone.
Meditation is also a skill, which requires practice and persistence.
Start with only 2 minutes of meditation every morning and evening and gradually increase the time. Expecting from yourself to do 30 minutes meditation as beginner is not achievable aim for most people.
I have a suggestion on the meditation part, something that really helped me was watching (on youtube) people.explain how they meditate, and specifically one that feayured a Tibetan monk explain meditation and specifically the misconceptions about what is and isn't meditation and how simple it can be. If you find you have trouble meditating sometimes it's more of our misconception of what we should be doing to meditate that's preventing us from actually doing it.
It's just a suggestion that I found helpful.
