I need assistance

I have a creature... I call him aegis at least that's what he responds too.. he first came to me after a passing of a therapy animal, he was shy at first I haven't seen him.. but touched him all over, his body is textured like bark, sturdy like a tree, hands clawed and humanoid, a head and ears like a jackal, horns like branches curved like a rams..he protects me and my partner.. he keeps me cool when I get too hot, warm when too cold, tucks me in, cuddles me close and doesn't let go if I'm lonely, during a nightmare he holds me and strokes my hair.. he tucks me in too... I have met many in my day but it's a first I have encountered one like him, he is very sweet when he is around he makes my home smell like oak, cherries and s'mores, I want to know what he is so I can thank him properly, lately he has gotten over protective, like he is trying to hide me from something outside my home, I appreciate him and all he does.

Hmm... From my experience with spirit work(which is very limited), I think that it might be a spiritual form of the therapy animal that passed away(possibly, it depends on what you think the species of the spirit may be, and also what species your pet was).

I've not personally met an animal spirit that takes on other forms, though that's not to say it can't happen. Personally, it sounds to me like some form of earth spirit or an imp of some type. I would set up a small ritual space to speak to the spirit and just ask them what they are. No harm in doing so and it would allow you to better understand and properly thank/work with them.
