I think the person who posted right above me is right but, I also think there are certian types of woods that a wand is made from that can be used for anything. Mine, for example is made of Indian Rosewood(sheesham)and it has done everything I have asked it to do and maybe a few things that I didn't know it could do.
You can do both. You can make a wand with a specific purpose. This would define the wood used, the decorations, and the gems and symbols on the wand. You could also make a wand out of wood that you feel a strong connection too. I think the decorations and ect on the wand should also reflect you.
A wand is just a tool. It is an extension of yourself and your intentions. You do not need a wand. Why not use and actual extension of yourself?
It depends what you are making your wand for. -For example, if you was making a wand for love spells ONLY, you might want to use a branch from a tree associated with love, such as holly.
If you would like a all-purpose wand, the same goes- use a good wood that has pretty much all-purpose magickal properties.
However, your wand doesnt have to be made out of wood; your wand can be made out of metal! You can order or buy metal rods from a lot of places, some even have crystals attached! (For a all-purpose wand, I recommend a clear or white quartz crystal.) But not all have to have a crystal.
On the other hand, you dont need a wand! You have your own built in wand - the index finger!

Elm is favored in romany magick. Hawthorn is favored in celtic and druid magick (british). Birch is favored in slavic magick. Bamboo with the leaves remaining was favored by the Ainu. Oleander was favored in berber magick. Brown oak was favored by the druids (gaul). Willow was favored in chinese and scythian magick. And yew was favored by many! But is poisonous! So don't handle the tree!
Oak has been considered sacred by every culture that oak is native to, especially the norse. It is associated with being hit by lightening often therefore it is associated with thunder and lightening gods such as zeus and thor.
Ash is the a norse traditional wood considered to be the same as yggdrasil (world tree).

It all really depends on what path you are taking.
For instance the celtic path honors the lunar calendar. So they have thirteen trees that corresponds to every lunar month. Some celtic witches will decipher what moon/tree they were born under and use that tree for their magickal workings. Others will use specific wood for every month.
I personally have a connection to Oak. Even my furnature is oak! =)
Some people just feel pulled to a certain tree. This is your intuition letting you know what tree relates to your energy closest and it will most likely be the best catalyst for your magickal practices. If you find a particular tree that you feel a pull to, sit under it and meditate. Ground and let your energy roots twine with the tree's roots. Relax and note how you feel. You may even get a sense as to what this tree will be best used for on your magickal path.
The ancients didn't get their correspondences from books. They found them through their own experimentation and connection with nature. Tap into your own connection and you'll discover a plenty of knowledge just waiting for you to dive into!

I don't think there's a wrong or right type of wood. Perhaps you'll want a specific wood type for very complex/personally important spells, but overall you use what's best for you.
I found a piece of wood from teh railroad near my home, for example. It was already rather want shaped, in how it splintered from the block and is now my "go to" wand even though it's not finished. You'll *know* without any doubt when you find the right wood. The wood knows what it's meant to do, and will tell you if you listen.
A wand is simply a phallic symbol used to direct energy. You can use anything with that shape, including your finger. Wood, metal, and some crystals are used because they are good conductors of energy. As for what type is right, I would ask myself "what am I looking for in a wand", then find something with those qualities. There is tons of information online. My most used search words are "metaphysical properties of____". Fill in the blank, and you will come up with many lists regarding that items properties. Also you can try holding it and meditating on how it makes you feel. Blessings :)
