I used to do a good bit of chakra work. Yes, things can disturb the opening of the chakras. But where i went wrong was forcing the chakras open. At the time i didn't think i was "forcing" them open, though i was.
I think some daily visualization exercises would be in order, grounding, centering, and cleansing. This should help to gradually clear any blockages. But i advise against forcing them open, they will open on their own.
Depending on your beliefs determines if you believe that your chakras are closed or not. Various people will profess that the chakras are already open and what causes the assumption of them being closed are blockages; therefore, causing the lack in ability to use them or use them in small quantities, per say. And ridding one's self of blockages grants the individual a greater usage of the chakras.
Some blockages can be present because of past events. Such as holding a grudge against some one up to the present moment. Various events from the past that one dwells on that very well may be holding the individual back. Such events of the past causing blockages can possibly even be from past lives carried on into the present life. And riding one's self of such blockages would involve healing the sourse; such as, removing grudges, accepting the past and moving on, and so forth.
Another type of blockage could even be from not accepting your self for who you are. Maybe you do not like how you look. Maybe people make fun of you for how you look or how your personality is or how you dress. To rid your self of such blockages you would need to accept your self for who you are, how you look, how you act, and so forth. Be proud of your self. Don't let people's opinions of you get you down. It's just their opinion of you. Yes, it's nice to know others accept you and like you, but it all revolves back to how you feel about your self.
Yes, what you visualize natters. Visualizing just any thing is working with your brow chakra (third eye chakra) because it is associated with visualization because the third eye is the mind's eye which can be used for visualization. So you can visualize some thing but that does not necessarily mean you will be working with your other chakras to make them stronger. You and I both can sit and visualize a ball. My ball and your ball will most likely be different. So in a sense, yes, what every one visualizes will be different from each other, even if under the same category such as a ball. Technically the blockages of one person is different from the other even if categorized the same. Such as depression. If I have depression and so do you, our chakras will be blocked. Your depression will be different from mine. So, yes, it's different for every one and depression can block your chakras.
depression is not the one who blocks your chakra.. better say is that depression is just one of the results of your blocked chakra.. yes it is.. one of the reasons why people are being depressed is because their chakras are blocked.. in order for you to get rid fully of your depression is to open your blocked chakras..
but even though you have opened your chakras, you can still experience depressions with no reasons.. why? it is because the energy is cleaning up your chakras and those negative energies that stays in your subconscious mind will eventually be released..
and about opening them, you can actually use many ways for you to open them.. actually there are lots of meditation techniques to choose from such as chanting some mantras (because chakras are sensitive to vibrations), or if you are not good at visualizations you can try using binaural or isochronic musics.. these tones will help you open your chakras.. you can also do kundalini yoga and hatha yoga to clean up your blocked chakras..
It's a common misconception that the chakras 'open' and 'close.' In fact, they are always 'open', it's just the activity/inactivity levels of the chakras that matter.
MoonCat, from this, It seems to me that your chakras are a little out of balance, but mainly your first four chakras.
1) The Root
2) The Sacral
3) The Solar Plexus
4) The Heart
Now, the Root is associated with depression, and depression is supposedly a sign of a 'weak/inactive' Root chakra. Once i've finished, ill place a link at the bottom for something called mudras. These help boost the activity of the chakras and clear out blockages. Meditation also helps.
Next, moving on to the second chakra, the sacral. A weak/inactive second chakra can be identified by shyness, lack of confidence, fearful immobilized by what if?, emotional disconnectedness, lack of trust, lack of vitality- passion for life.
After that, the solar plexus. Now this chakra is associated with happiness, acceptance of the self, and the fear of being alone. Of course i'm just naming a few here, the ones that I think would cause the most concern.
Ok, the heart chakra, number four. With many teens these days, and people who suffer with depression, an issue they have is the inability to love one's self.
So if you wish to 'improve' the activity of those chakras, copy the mudra techniques below. This will increase the activity of the chakras AND improve the way you feel. But remember, don't focus on one particular chakra. Keep balanced.

they have effective ways on opening of the chakras.. i would like to point out the term "open" for the chakra, open means your chakra is spinning faster and no blockage- just like what the others are saying.. the faster the spinning of the chakra (and the more vibrant its color) the more it is open.. why? because chakras are like vortex in the body..
