Not at all. House cleansing rituals are simple, easy and totally benign.

The standard is a sage smudging. Simply burn a stick of sage and allow the smoke to waft throughout your home. Negative energies are repelled by sage. Rosemary is also effective for cleansing negativity that may already be present within it, so pour some in a small glass bottle, place the bottle in the central room of your house, insert a white candle into the mouth of the bottle, and light it, allowing the candle to burn out completely. Then, cork the bottle shut and bury it in your yard or garden. This promotes domestic harmony.

Blessed be.

As someone recommended earlier, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. When you do it, visualize it surrounding your whole house, and when you bring down the light during it, visualize it filling your whole house. There are several versions of it on this site. But if you truely want to understand it, listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zKVEcPJ368 . Use it as a guided meditation too. Works great.

LVX,

Shawn.

not unless you invite it in, but with cleansings you should be concentrating on negative beings/energy being forced out of your home forever, you could chant, visualize, or think of your outcome, but that coupled with however you're cleansing gets all negativity out. it can seep back in after a while, yes, which is why you should put up a protection charm, and try to make cleansing an annual thing.

The trick with house cleansing rituals is that they only get rid of what is already in your home. They don't protect against anything else that might then want to move in. That's why a house cleansing should also be followed by a warding a shielding to prevent any new unwanted entities from taking up residence in your home.

@ SpiritualMan, you invite in things subconsciously, if you say 'everyone's welcome' it could lead to negative energy/beings coming in. you need to be specific, like with the cleansing you should say something like 'negative energy and beings wishing me harm must leave this space forever' this gets rid of everything negative. as long as the sage, or the sea salt, or whatever you used, is still lingering the negative energy/beings can't get back in, but that's temporary. in that time you should do a protection spell on your home, put up herbs or charms to protect your home, stuff like that. keep in mind, all spells wear off, negative energy can come back into your home, so you'll need to recast and recleanse. a good time frame, in my opinion anyway, should be a cleansing once a year, and a protection spell every 4-6 months depending on what's going on in your life.

I agree with you when you say spells wear off, you would have to cast it like every couple of weeks.

Indeed. My husband and I do a formal house cleansing and reset our wards ever Midsummer. In addition I have a Witch's Ball that hangs in our bedroom, and a Witch's Bottle at the threshold, and other charms to ward off negativity.

Most of the time it is we ourselves who bring negative energies into our home. A bad day at work or school, someone making us mad during the commute home, and other annoyances can create negative energies that stick to us. If we don't rid ourselves of these before we come in our front door, then we bring them in with us. So if you are feeling negatively when you get home it's a good idea to do something to get rid of that negativity before you go in your house.

A simple but effective method I've found is to pick up a small stone, hold it in your left hand, and push all of the negativity you sense in yourself into that stone. Then toss it over your shoulder (Be careful it doesn't land in your yard!) and walk away from it without looking back.

When I was roomsharing in an apartment, I found the house tended to get clogged up fast with all the different energies, stress, and PMSy attitudes that comes with living with 5 college girls in a small space. I couldn't sage like I normally would because one of my roommates was asthmatic, so instead I would salt the house and then systematically sweep it all out the front door while saying, "This is MY house, MY space - keep OUT!" Then I'd put sprigs of juniper and braids of sweetgrass in the doorframes to fill up the space with positivity, and if I was feeling particularly ambitious, I'd grid the house. Like Lark said, it's important to protect and ward your space after cleaning it out, but it's also important to fill it back up with positivity or some other good-willed intent.
