The lore behind the hell-hounds describes them as punishers not protectors. These creatures were said to be sent to collect those who had done terrible things and to drag them back to Hell. They are known to be dangerous and destructive. They do not let anyone or anything stop them from their task.
I find it unlikely it would be a hell-hound that helped you. Though it could be some other form of spectral dog.

Why is it in the woods? I'd need the whole story of exactly how it protected you but it doesn't sound like any dark creature. Is it near a ritual area? Did you unintentionally summon it?
I did a kinda spell and summoned him I just summoned a demon and he showed up and other things too but hes about 5 feet tall or taller, red eyes, black as night fur that seems to have blood or something on it and he just dissapears behind trees in black smoke and a faint reddish glow I believe (I summoned them in the woods thats why in the woods). My friends were pissing me off and he showed up two seperate times and really scared them like barred his teeth and then would always smile and wink at me before vanishing and I can see him in the woods at night sometimes watching me. Strange thing is I can remember him since childhood but he never appeared visually till the spell I guess. I named him cruentus which is I think latin for bloodthirsty
Also note ive had experience with demons since I was little but they never hurt me

Well, Belle the name does mean blood thirsty but as he has yet to harm anyone, and judging from the description I'd stay its the meaning Bloodstained. You do describe a hellhound and he may have come to protect you in a way. The hellhounds protect the supernatural world. But remember that they are also the heralds of death and demonic. To look into their eyes too often can bring a death curse to someone, including your friends. Or someone unfortunate enough to run across him in the woods.
Well no ones died yet but its a good thing im the only one that goes to those woods I suppose

This is certainly interesting. Cruentus sounds more mischievous than the cruelty his name would imply. Also that he would choose to protect you means you're rather special. I've heard of people who's spirit guides appear in many different forms...has he ever attempted communication?
No not really but if its the same hell hound as my childhood then he used to lay by my legs at night as I fell asleep and ive had other things happening with different demons and not just Hellhounds
Here's a story. So there was a group of people and there was this girl how wanted to join the group. So the group of people diside to play a prank on her. They took her to a old grave yard and the group of people said to her that they going to talk to spirits. But when they sat down to start the heard barking and the saw a big, red eyed, smoking dog barking. Then it vanish, the girl said to the group of people that it was a hell hound and if they see it three times they will die. As they started to run the hell hound appear in front of them and started barking but quickly vanishes. When they got to the car they started to drive and when they thought they got away the hell hound appear in the road and the car crashed. The creepiest thing is that the girl who wanted to join the group crawled out of the car and pet the hell hound and walked away. Its just a story.
Some people say a hell hound smells like roting fleash, or smokey. They also come in many forms. Some tall and thin, looks like a wolf, or a zombie dog. But always have black skin or fur. Also hell hounds are protectors but they also can be takers. They hunt for people who maked a deal with the devil or looking to someone to mess with.
Or you have a spirit or demon that took a from of a dog like creature.
Is it here to hurt me or protect me? Well all I can say is what do you believe?
Hope this helps you. Sorry for the spelling errors.
