This is what I meant about how the news is presented. So the woman who lifted the car was "little"? Lifted the whole car,and then "dragged her daughter out"? The lady could have been a trained weight-lifter for all we know! All women are not helpless weaklings.
Also, as it has been said many times on this site; you may believe anything you wish.
I fail to understand why science and spirituality need be separated. That's like going out and trying to find the truth but decided that you'll leave logic and reason behind in the interest of keeping the truth pure.
Go ahead and find something tall to leap off of with your magic broomstick spell. I'm all for weeding out the population.
The lady lifting a car to free her child is straight out of Hollywood. In the television series The incredible Hulk The main character Dr David Banner (the hulk) was a researcher working on finding ways to tap into hidden human strength. One of the people he interviewed during his research was a lady who lifted a car to save her child. Science has a good explanation for the reason she could do this as Brysing stated already it is adrenaline.
Those who claim anything is possible are only fooling themselves. Those with experience understand that not all things are possible however reaching your greatest potential is. Reach for the stars but don't trip over your own two feet.
Lol! It wasn't from the Incredible Hulk, it was from Fox or NBC Chicago news. My parents would watch both. I don't watch the news anymore, I would rather read it. There were witnesses and they consulted scientists who were stunned. All they said was that adrenaline could have caused it but it was indeed a miracle because even adrenaline isn't supposed to cause that much of an increase in strength. This was about 15 years ago. I have an excellent memory. Most people from Chicago remember it, it was huge news. It made front headlines.
I don't disclaim science and I keep up with it. But I don't believe it all. They constantly change their "guesses" that they call theories. Scientific "fact" 50 years ago is not present day fact. It constantly changes as they disprove and find new things to guess at. I commend them for working so hard to figure out the mysteries of the world. But there is quite a lot that they do not know, yet act like know-it-alls. Experimentation is based off of percentages and statistics but nothing is 100%. Not one study will you find 100%. So I never ever take it as 100% truth because clearly it isn't. Those who believe they know the truth are ignorant! To know that you are ignorant and seek the truth is truly wise.
Invention/technology is the only part in science I can say is remarkable. But to know what we can create and the internal workings of it is far more certain than attempting to figure out what we have not created (ie the world). It takes constant trial and error throughout years when people make inventions to effect the natural world/beings therein. If they knew everything, why so much failure?
By the way, finally a good debate! =) This should happen more often.
Invention and technology are rooted in the theories that you discount. Science evolves, and it should. If it didn't we'd still be rubbing pigeons on people's feet to help cure various ailments. It's a matter of exploring and understanding the theory so as to know whether the source is credible or not... Just as in exploring magic.
If you study the origins, subsequent history, and background of a source of magic (or lack thereof), you can usually dismiss a great deal of the baggage that comes with it. Then if you apply reason (science), psychology, linguistics, etc. you can understand what aspects of a certain form of magic are metaphor, which are rooted within the subconscious, and which aspects are actually external.
Unfortunately, this just doesn't occur within most people's minds leaving the whole situation largely ruled by "Well, it's what I believe. It's my faith. So it is true to me and you have no right to tell me otherwise."
Well fine. By that logic, everyone should have experienced the Rapture Saturday. But they didn't.
And the woman/man lifting a car is a story that appears every now and then as the feel-good piece in news stories. I've seen it too. occasionally there's a small car or a very large person who has a rush of adrenaline and tilts/lifts the car enough to get the trapped individual out. It isn't fiction. I actually know somebody who used to bench press his jeep. Big, scary giant of a man. I've also helped a friend pick up and move another friend's car in a practical joke. Not so difficult in some cases. I imagine if I had proper motivation (somebody being trapped) it would have been easier.
I don't discount theories, I just see them as they are.
theory [r] n pl -ries 1. a system of rules, procedures, and assumptions used to produce a result 2. abstract knowledge or reasoning 3. a speculative or conjectural view or idea; I have a theory about that 4. an ideal or hypothetical situation (esp in the phrase in theory) 5. a set of hypotheses related by logical or mathematical arguments to explain and predict a wide variety of connected phenomena in general terms the theory of relativity 6. a nontechnical name for hypothesis [1] [from Late Latin theria, from Greek: a sight, from therein to gaze upon] (Collins English Dictionary)
No where does it say these are 100% facts. But I see a lot of other words "abstract", "assumptions" "conjectural view" "idea" "hypotheses" "arguements". None of those tell me that a theory is a fact or a truth!
And not even scientists use these as facts. Some scientist do nothing but work on disproving theories. Einstein, after years of being seen as having outstanding theories was disproven. Scientists used his theories to create more and more "theories", and all theories based on them were discredited. I was taught these theories in school, that these were the way things were. And now they are worth nothing. Today's theories will be tomorrow's false claims.
I have studied psychology in college. I was going to become a forensic psychologist double majoring in criminal justice and non clinical behavioral psychology. And I dropped psychology as my major because i realized how deluted it was to the nature of the mind. Our first psychologist, the philosophers knew better. Modern psychology is nothing but taking apart the human mind to the point where there is no such thing as sanity. Everyone in this world to them is neurotic, schizophrenic or psychotic. And there is no way I believe that. What they see as wrong is natural. There are some people in the world who are in need of real help. But put anyone in front of a psychologist and they'll find something to pick at. I lost all will to continue in that field. I've spoken to many who have gone through the same thing.
True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. ~Socrates
I do not have "beliefs" my friend. I take everything in with a forever questioning mind. =)
Well, you've got me there. I just don't like to see blind faith stepping in front of even something that reminds just a theory, as at least a theory is based upon somewhat of an educated understanding.
Not that I'm suggesting you were speaking entirely of blind faith... I would just rather discourage it whenever possible.
I understand completely. And I really enjoyed our discussion. I have a lot of respect for people who can debate intelligently without anger. Everyone can state their opinion, but few will take the time to discuss a topic thoroughly with an open mind.
