I thought spirit was an element that you could have? I heard it was about balance, and it has traits from all the elements. I was thinking it was my element since I always want balance and I love and understand all the elements. I've never really felt close to one specific element. Was I misled?

I suggest reading through the rest of the threads. The concept of being or having an element was discussed earlier.
Spirit is considered an element by some, but it is not composed of all others. It can influence them, but the elements are rooted in the physical world. Spirit is, obviously, regarding spiritual energies (which are not of the physical).
For this reason it was not included as an element within Western Traditions. In Japan they include an element known as Void, which includes many of the concepts of the spirit or the divine. Modern occult/magical practice sometimes includes Spirit as an element in part because of this influence and in part because of a deep lack of understanding of the old ways.
Which isn't so different from the modern need to define your element.
In my experience, it is not a specifically obtainable element. This is because we all have a spirit, and we all learn to control it's energies. Because the spirit element is already within oneself, it is often and almost always excluded as an obtainable element. Try working with each element more to really get a feel for its energies, and see if they synchronize or at least excite your own.

I agree. Your element isn't always based off of your zodiac sign, but for some it is.. They could have found their one element they relate with most, without even know it had to do with their zodiac sign. I'm a Leo, but my main element that I relate with most, is Water. I even wear a ring carved from a sea shell on my power hand. It didn't take much experimentation for me, it was more or less a dream that had made it all set in.
Now, I do practice with the rest of the elements. Fire is more of my defensive element. Air, I practice with when I need some creativity to flow, or inspiration. Lastly, Earth. It keeps me grounded and aware. Also helps with a little inspiration. Since I can't live in Water, I can't always get my energy from it, so that's where Earth, Air, and Fire also come in.
With me, they're practiced an equal amount. I am not bound to just one element.
Someone mentioned that your element can affect your personality or likes/dislikes (or vise versa) can someone explain more deeply into that (like what personality matches with what element)
I dont think the zodiac signs have an influence on your element, but Im a Libra [Air] and I feel at home outside when the winds blowing strong. I just want to run and let the wind carry me with it.
