Magic existed before religion and will continue to exist no matter what. Magic is nature, it is science, it is medicine, it is psychology... Magic is a loaded word!
And many people erroneously believe that it applies only to "casting". The star athelete that won't play a game without his lucky shirt is using magic. The wish made on birthday candles or a star--magic. Prayer--magic. Ever lit a candle for someone? Yep, magic. Bad luck superstition "reversals" like throwing salt over your shoulder--magic! Amulets, talismans, icons, altars, Everyone over the entire world, no matter what time period, culture, or religion has in some form practiced magic. Even those that say it is evil ignore the reality that they in fact experience it daily.
"sin" "bad soul" "evil spirit" These are the words of men and religion. Magic is far above and beyond all of that.
I am a Christian witch, and I've struggled with this a lot. After a lot of soul searching, I came to a conclusion that works for me. I don't think that casting spells is a sin. Magic is just intention put to energy. Energy is in all things.
If you are a Christian, and believe in God and Sins. Then, yes. Casting magic is a sin, God doesn't like any form of magic because it calls upon something other than him to work. Though, just as any other sin God will forgive you for your sin if you ask for forgiveness.
I am a muslim, but there is so much hate about witchcraft that it involves evil spirits and demons and any diety, i beilive there is not harm in casting spells without any evil spirits or demons or any deity,
One thing just don t call upon evil spirits and demons.
What people choose to do with magic is their choice. It is the intention behind the caster which constitutes whether it is good or bad. Also be mindful that a sin is when someone breaks a divine law, which depends on your religious background. You are asking a question in which you know the answer to. If your background says its a sin, then FOR YOU it is because you believe it is. Whereas if someone does not believe in what you do, then it isn't a sin for them.
By the way, there isn't much difference from a spell or a prayer.
I used to be a Muslim until the age of 13 years old, I stopped giving my time for religion. I am an agnostic however due to the face that we do not have concrete evidence of god being fake or real. To answer your question, no it is not a sin HOWEVER casting spells for evil doings can be seen as one. I am just here for fun, so whatevs.
According to your religion it is a very serious sin and is absolutely forbidden. Whether you choose to follow that teaching or not is strictly up to you. In my religion it is forbidden too but I choose to be who I am. I am a witch. I will not allow any religion to stop me from being who I am. I will be kind and use what I can do and what I have learned to help others and I am at peace and happy with that. I hope this answer was helpful.
