I was just wondering how those of you who are religious in this way see the moon. What is your symbolism or symbology.
Here is my view;
A large part of paganism is symbolic and that really means that what you associate with something else is a symbol of that particular thing. Associations are a personal thing, some are just more common than others but religious ones are individual.
I can see how the sun could be a symbol for the goddess or the god, I can also see the same about the moon. The kicker is that personally I see the sun as part of god and the moon part of god but then again I see the earth as part of god and that tree over there as well . Everything is part of god, god is the higher powers, all of them combined into one. It is only aspects of this "god" that becomes gods and goddesses. Theses gods are either male or female depending on how you see them. The moon god is the same as the moon goddess, it is just how you see this particular god maybe you pull the male aspect out of this god and not the female.
Besides there is a theory that there is no "god" of the moon or sun. All I am saying is that maybe these beings/higher powers are not gods. Maybe they don't think of themselves as gods because they are closer to "god" (in terms of understanding) and it is only people that gave them that title. Maybe they don't want to be seen as a "god" but as just another being on the same level as all beings only with a different job to do.
I see the moon as a femal object, power, and as a female person...
i don't know why maybe cus in my language, the moon has a female name called "LUNA"
When i look at it shining down on earth in its beauty i can see that it's shining in all the glory of women...i don't know why i just see it as if a female would take its form.
Also, i think the goddess of the moon is called Inanna i don't know from which religion the goddess originates though...i think it's Pagan
I see the moon as a rock. A big, giant, rock that is caught in Earth's gravitational pull so it constantly circles us all; threatening to fall and squish us like bugs... Yup. Big giant rock.
You see the moon was originally a part of the Earth, but when an meteor of some size hit us the moon was shot from the ground and got caught in orbit. Because of that the moon is now a satellite.
If you want a religious point of view on it though; as a Christian I say rock, as a researcher of religion I say the Greek mythology is my favorite in which Artemis is the Moon Goddess and the mother of hunters. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, twin sister of Apollo. She is the Hellenic goddess of hills and forests, child birth, virginity, and fertility. She is often depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows, the deer and cypress are sacred to her. Her association with the moon is questionable, but she's still one of my favorite subjects of study. Other moon goddesses include another Greek goddess; Selene the titaness (often depicted with a crescent moon above her head), then the Etruscan goddess Artume, and my very favorite: the Roman goddess, Diana.
Diana was the equivalent of Artemis with a few additions: Oak groves were especially sacred to her, she was the emblem of chastity, daughter of Jupiter and Latona, and was a part of a trinity which included: Egeria, the water nymph, who was her servant and assistant midwife, and Virbius, the woodland god.
So by so many religions the moon would be female (the sun, in some religions, being the moon's mate would be male), but to me the moon is a rock and the sun is a molten glob of burning cancer-rays. :)
just a little note the mooon is not only caught in earth gravitational feild but actaully is caught in its very own little dance with the earth the earth and moon rotate around one point (within earths mass but to a side) and it is this eternal dance they weave as the planet moves around the sun that creates our tides and stable gravity feild, on other planets similar to ours studied by scientists and such, they find with no moon, the oceans are raging and fierce with no currents or stable flows and tides, constant tsunamis and hurricanes and floods. so yes the sun can be seen as a young male, strong and providing, the earth as the mother of life, water as her consort (because without water there is no live) and the universe, the dense emptiness and blackness of space is the father of all, that holds and supports everyone. but without the moon, the others would not work on harmony (you will notice in many religions she is portrayed as the eternal mother (even to the gods) the guardian ever watching, ever gentle, keeping the balance in everyones lives.
