What is geass?

I asked a fan and he replied...

"Geass is the ability to have people do whatever you want"
I can somewhat do that, but you must first learn to be an empath and energy manipulator and how to charge things with certain emotions. you can make people depressed leave you alone etc. etc. simple stuff.

I think Geass is just some sort of name given to an anime as a mean of hypnosis.
