Actually, I'd say people have been casting spells ever since they developed a frontal lobe and vocal cords suitable for language, and maybe even before. That was at least a couple million years ago. If we count tablets and scrolls and other portable pieces of magical notation, the spellbook is still at most only a few thousand years old.
