For you to feel the texture of your wand is important I believe and the crack, etc. that will develop in the wood hold wisdom and other desirable qualities in a wand or staff.

I believe that is is important for one to feel the texture of their wand or staff. In addition, the cracks, etc. that develop in unvarnished wood can hold wisdom, temperance and other desirable qualities necessary when casting a spell or being directed/led or transported by your staff.
