Check out Daniel Schulke's works. He covers herbal stuff and potion making in his books:

"Ars Philtron: Concerning the Aqueous Cunning Of the Potion And Its Praxis in the Green Arte Magical"

and

"Viridarium Umbris. The Pleasure Garden of Shadows, which Treats of the Secret Knowledge of Trees and Herbs Deliver'd by the Fallen Angels unto Man"

and

"Viridarium Umbris. The Pleasure Garden of Shadows, which Treats of the Secret Knowledge of Trees and Herbs Deliver'd by the Fallen Angels unto Man" (same as the above of the similar name, but with "Epistle of the Tree" added to it).

Those books can be pricey (unless you can find a download of them).

Also check out Scott Cunningham's "The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews", Gerina Dunwich's "Magick Potions: How to Prepare and Use Homemade Incense, Oils, Aphrodisacs, and Much More", and any of Ann Moura's "Green Witchcraft" books.

A potion is any wet form of magic. This includes teas, oils for many causes including message, holy water, and inks used for writing. Most herb based potions will be heated to help release the natural oils and aspects you want in your potion.

Potions may include : Oils , Brews m Tinctures , Concotions and many other. Unlike what Wiccan practitioners claim , they do contain non-herbal materials despite the secret herb names disguised by terms such as Jew finger , toad leg and allike.

Even Crystal elyxirs can be part of potions or considered potions themselves.

To make Your potions You need to know well Your herbal , mineral and zoologicl correspondences and general proceduresof potioncraft. That means that You need to know how to make infusion, macerate , cocoction, philtre , oil and other forms of potions , how tp bless /enchant them etc .

In Cnjure tradition we use floorwshes and handwashes , and they can too be considered forms of potions. Like using yellow dock, and cinnamon with an optional addition of patchoulito make a infusion to anoint Your doorknobs to attract customers to Your business .

Chinese wash is a potion for itself and a floorwash. I wrote about that in another thread.

As for stiring that You metioned , it is popular in terms of European folk Craft where we tend to stir certain number of times , repeating by need . For example potions that have to do somethiong with spirits we would stir 7 times or 7 times in 7 times. Just consult number correspondences for this. Stiring Sunwise is used for potions that shoul attract something , while stirng in opposite directions is generally used in repeling and cleansing potions.

Read Gerina Dunwitch's Magick potions as it explains the materry pretty well. You have quite a few recipes for potions that are very good posted here.

Good luck!

Here's a google books preview of the 'Complete book of etc...'

http://books.google.com/books?id=zrxM4dnKcxoC&printsec=frontcover&dq=The+Complete+Book+of+Incense,+Oils+%26+Brews&hl=en&ei=1DDCS9rtC4aKlwfIit3bBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CD4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

It kinda sucks because it's missing pages 53-275.
