There is a belief in my country that if a pregnant woman craves for something she can't have (no matter if its object or food) and at the end of the day she has a chance of getting it without being noticed and she actually does that (steal) the item and after its receiving gets into her possession at the same time the first part of her body that she will touch will be reflected and marked with the shape of the item at her baby's skin, which represents the birthmark. If the woman is more aware of her deeds at that time she MUST first touch the ground and the "mark" will remain underground not reflecting on her baby...
Because this belief is strong among the people in my country it does happen to be true for I. myself am a birthmarked xD
Here goes the story: When my mother was pregnant with me, she was going to work in an office with 3 of her fiends and one day they all have brought fruits of their gardens so their colleges can try them. Anyway the one that sat near my mother's desk brought sweet and full grapes-ah my mom adores grapes... They had their feast but the lady near by hid her grapes in her drawer and my mom witnessed that, when the break begun they all went out only my mother stayed inside the office and she opened the drawer to take one last bite of the grapes, she had taken one grape and rolled it in her mouth when a thought of the superstition came to her mind she spat the grape and hugged herself! yes hugged herself instead of touching the ground... But it was too late, she had "stolen" the grape and touched herself... and now I carry the mark of her deed, i have a white grape under my left shoulder at the back... its eye-shaped since the grape was big and full... xD what a mess, a friend of mine has a rose on his chick....butt chick xD I feel fortunate enough...
There are lots of superstitions about the birthmarks.... Do You have any?

Makes me wonder the tale of dragon birthmarks?
(Steal a dragon)
I have never heard of that previously, however I have a small birthmark on the back of my ankle that goes between looking like a turtle, frog, and a cloud. XD It is rather oddly shaped.

I have read in Bucklands book on Gypsy Magick that birthmarks in certain locations mean certain things. For example a birthmark (or beauty mark as it is also called) on the head is a sign of intelligence.
There is a different association for each location. I don't think I still have the book, but I'll see if I can't find something on the information.
I have a book on mole meanings depending on its place on the body...but birthmarks...nope I will gladly read such thing.

Well, now what do you consider to be the difference between a mole and a beauty mark Mara?
Here, they are usually considered the same thing.

I haven't read up on birthmarks, but in my country if you have certain things in your body you can be either lucky or unlucky. For example you have thick earlobes and you are suppose to be wealthy ;)
@ Rashnu Here in my country moles are the tiny pigmented dots on the body which can be only on the surface on the skin or be like..kind of bubble like pigments and the birthmarks are the larger pigments of the skin that are of some shape.
