Personally, I know of the Irish protection of carrying a three leaf clover during labor as a symbol of mother, father and child.
I refused to remove my necklaces during labor in the hospital, even though the nurse at first insisted. She changed her tune when she saw one was a pentacle.

Like my oldest had pyloric stenosis, it's a hereditary birth defect, there's nothing that could have prevented it. But we lucked out to end up in the best pediatric surgery hospital in the nation.
