I have a wand simply because making it was a very peaceful experience and I imbued a lot of my own power into the wand. As such it is still a very powerful tool.
Polishing can be done first by varying grades of sandpaper, you can get these at hardware stores in the automotive section or at a craft/woodworking store.
Then you can apply any sort of oil you like, and go at it with a cloth. I think professional wandmakers use linseed oil or something of the sort. An old, worn cloth is best. Not like a ratty old washrag but more of a softened old t-shirt kind of cloth.
