lol..no. you don't need to perform any ritual to make a coven. A coven is just a group of people doing a particular type of magick, most often, together. So you don't need to do any type of ritual to create a coven, but you can do rituals with your fellow members after creating the coven.

The early Catholic Church told people that a witches was coven was 13. They tried to make it an idea that a coven was "imitating" Jesus and his 12 mates, in order to carry out "black Mass."
Nonsense, of course. A coven can be any number from two up!
I've always held the belief that Jesus and his 12 mates were a coven. Jesus was a healer, such things were associated with witchcraft. I have even read that there's the possibility that during his 'missing years' that he trained with the druids. Either way Jesus certainly did some magickal things, he communed with the devil, angels, God and exorcised spirits. Things a lot of modern high magicians do today. He was also Jewish and so was probably taught the qabalah.
Of course I could be completely wrong.......
You may like to do a ritual once the coven has been established were you pledge an oath of secrecy (magick work is meant to be private.) and then do a blessing. There are no rules other than enjoy yourself and trust each other. I have practiced with others, I prefer solitary work myself I tend to have my unique way of performing rituals.......I go with the flow.

Hecate. What you have written about Jesus is a belief. Anybody may believe anything they wish, but a belief does not make it true. What I wrote about the Catholic Church is what I was taught at catholic school!
You cannot say that Jesus "certainly" did anything!
I didn't mean it that way, I meant the things we are taught n the bible shows that as in according to his one historical source he did do these things, healing, communing with spirits etc. I was just saying they are comparable to what a lot of magick practitioners. I did state at the beginning that I held the belief, I agree using the word 'certainly' wasn't the best lexical choice but it was midnight and my vocabulary was limited lol.
I will openly state my post was opinion and not necessarily fact.
The traditional number for a coven is up to 13 that being the maximum number allowed per say. Anything more then that is usually thought of as a grove or a lodge whichever you wish to use. Also the formation of a coven is very serious indeed and not to be taken lightly. These people are going to become like family to you. You will perform great works together, you will use eachothers energy and you may even share secrets with your coven mates that no one else knows. So yes you can if you desire preform some form of concacration ritual for the formation of your coven asking the Gods to look down on you with favor and success in your endevours. It also helps to concacrate your ritual coven space if you plan to meet in the same place every time. It is a say for the members to put personal energy into the coven that they build and personal energy in magick is everything.
