Nobody has an element. This is modern misunderstanding rooted somewhat in the teachings of Astrology and Eliphas Levi's exploration of the elements. Begin with what is more comfortable to you - even if that means two elements, and use that to begin to understand the others.
Thank you much kind sir. I am extremely new to this, so how would I go about experimenting with both fire and water? I know you must be busy, but your time is much appreciated.

Light a candle, or sit by the fireplace, and feel the energy of the fire. Try to understand it, how it flows, what it entails. Do the same with any other element - air, sit outside when there is wind or a breeze. Water, sit in the tub or go by a stream, or enjoy the rain. Earth, put your feet in the sand or plant a garden and meditate upon it while you work within the soil.
Do not expect Hollywood-esque results. These energies are not going to let you control elements or anything of that nature.
Here's my two bits. Nature has five elements - Fire, Earth, Water, Air and Spirit. An imbalance of any element can result in natural disasters.
You aren't very different from nature. You don't have one or two elements, you have all five of them.
Fire - in the form of body temperature
Earth - in the form of sugar or salt
Water - 60% for the proportion of body-weight is believed to be water
Air - As much as we don't admit this publicly, we all pass wind from time to time
Spirit - being your soul
Imbalance in any of the above can bring upon ill health. So instead of focusing on one or two elements, I personally prefer to focus on all of them.
So to answer your question, all the elements are yours. Work with all of them. Although some people find it easier to work with just one or two elements,I see no harm in working with all of them. More elements the better, right?
And like Awake said, meditate on them. But please dont expect a Hollywood-esque results.
awake too long is right, but i have heard that you can meditate on each element.you should see which element your comfortable with...
i give you some simple tips on meditating on the elements:
start with earth.because earth is the element most near to us,in sunny day just sit on the ground and empty your mind and start feeling the earth underneath you,its kinda like grounding.but not only that, start thinking for the earth properties and to experience them.such as being cool ,moist ,stable and receptive.then start feeling its energy...then start pulling up and pushing down, pulling up energy and pushing down negativity.make a cycle of energy passing through it and you, that is how you became one with something...wear its colors, green ,brown or black...breath it smells, the smell of wet ground after rain
earth is a living being that has immense energy
you have earth on your side nothing can get you out of balance
read about earth as element...according all western and easter sstems
look for wester ways, look for easter ways...also look for Kapha Dosha.you may think that what is it,kapha dosha is kind of energy, that is constructed from earth and water.then do the same for air,ari is the biggest brother of earth...
i asked that from an exerienced person, and she gave me an amazing answer as you can see.
hope i helped :)
