Poll: Your Main Deities By: Personified / Knowledgeable
Post # 1 Mar 13, 2013
A poll for the Norse pagans here! I think we could make some interesting conversation on deities and the ways we include them in our work. It gives you a chance to share a bit about your personal practice and the deities you spend time with, as well as meet others who do the same.
For those of you who work within the Norse pantheon, which deity(ies) do you work with the most?
How did you come to work with them/him/her?
In what ways do you include them/him/her in your practice?
Outside of the main pantheons, do you work with other types of wights?
the first time, i was actually on here, someone told me i should try working with Loki, so i tried. i asked him to bless my first bindrune, and i feel he did very well. i literally felt stronger and as if i had more energy and stamina (it was uruz and something else. its been awhile since i saw it, sadly.) so, i figured i would work with him for a bit. so i prayed and sacrificed to him, then i lost the bindrune he blessed, so after an hour of searching, i gave up and asked him to help me find it, then i got an idea of where it might be. and it was there. in hindsight, though, Loki may not have been the wisest choice of god to ask for help with a lost thing. i lost the bloody thing a good dozen or so times since then.
i pray to him frequently, and make sacrifices of mainly blood and sometimes burning myself or other sacrificial things to him, although i try not to bother him much, i sometimes ask him to help me improve my wits, or to help me through a situation in which i dont want to just go into guns blazing, so to speak. or to help me discover what someones personality really is like.
i dont really work with any other wights, although i want to.
1. For those of you who work within the Norse pantheon, which deity(ies) do you work with the most?
I work with almost all of the Aesir and Vanir and a select few of Jotnar. I mainly work with Thor, Odin, and Bragi. Thor protects me and gives me strength, Odin gives me cunning and wisdom, and Bragi keeps me light hearted and inspired. I also work a lot with Freyja and Idunn.
2. How did you come to work with them/him/her?
I am closest to Thor. When I was young I had a very spiritual experience during a storm after I had lost a game during a tournement. I felt weak and that's when I first had this wild thought of Thor, before then I had little interest in him or the Norse path. Which is odd because I was brewing mead and doing rune work at the time. It's almost like I was meant to walk this path before I knew of it. Wyrd works in odd ways.
3. In what ways do you include them/him/her in your practice?
Before I practice magic, I ask Thor to cleanse and keep safe the area. I offer him mead and come to him for advise. He is the everyman's man. He gives advise on most things and is an active, lively, and earthly god.
4. Outside of the main pantheons, do you work with other types of wights?
I work with local wights in my area. I work with the ljossalfar and occasionally with duergar. Other than that, I don't venture far from the main pantheons.

For those of you who work within the Norse pantheon, which deity(ies) do you work with the most?
Namely the deities I work with fall within the Rokkr pantheon. In order of how frequently I work with them/honor them: Loki, Fenrir, Hel, Nidhogg, Mimir, Utgard-Loki and Freyja. Past that you get down into lesser known Jotunfolk, like Skoll/Hati,Vafthrudnir and Hyrrokkin, that I include in some work.
How did you come to work with them/him/her?
I started working with Loki when I was 14. It was through my experiences with him that I was "introduced" to the other jotunfolk and the deities within the Rokkr pantheon. This is likely why I have little interest or experience with the Aesir or the Vanir. I had a very personal experience with Loki and knew immediately that he was the one for me. I did a dedicational ritual and started doing devotionals for him ever since. Since then it's been nothing but sunshine and rainbows with him, metaphorically. The other deities came over time, and I work on building my experience and relationship with them in the same manner.
In what ways do you include them/him/her in your practice?
I spend a great deal of my time dedicated to devotional work. I take on one particular deity at a time (sometimes for a day, a week, a month, a few months, etc) and spend my time getting to know more about them, doing daily devotionals, offering things up to them and otherwise honoring them. I include Loki, Fenrir and Hel in a lot of my magickal workings. Hel is who I consult when I'm dealing with nids, or curses, or with death in general. I also consult Hel when I am doing seidhr or valgaldr. Fenrir is who I go to for berserking and physical/emotional things. Loki is who I go to when I need to learn something, when I want to see something from a new perspective, or I see the honest blunt truth of a matter. So on.
Outside of the main pantheons, do you work with other types of wights?
I work mainly with the jotunfolk. I also honor and work with the landvaettir and house spirits. I build little spirit houses for them and leave offerings around my property.
For those of you who work within the Norse pantheon, which deity(ies) do you work with the most? I manily work with Loki but have also had a few connections with Hel,Fenrir,Sigyn and I am planning on making a attempted to get to know Odin a bit. Other then that I have not ventured out much getting to know more of the other Gods on a personal level, but I am sure that will come in time.
How did you come to work with them/him/her? When I first got interested in Norse Pagainsm I was not sure about where I wanted to go. I did a basic research on most of the Gods but no one really stood out like Loki did. Then I remember going through a hard time and my life was really chaotic. I ended up finally connecting to Loki because I knew he would understand. After the first connection to him I knew that I wanted to work with him more then any of the other Gods. After our relationship grew more I started wanting to know more about his family. After awhile he started to introduce me to his family and got me working with them more. I have now just put things in his hands for say. I leave it up to him who he thinks I will need to talk to or work with.
In what ways do you include them/him/her in your practice? I created a lovely alter for him which I am very happy with and one thing I like about it is, I am not very good with change and Loki likes to change things up, so its never stays the same for long which helps me not to get into habits of stillness. I have offered him alcohol, candy, little toys, blood, poems, anything pretty much that I think he would like or gives me a sign that he wants something in particular and I do this because I love him and because he spends so much time helping me in my daily life. I share with him all the good things that happen in my life along with the bad. Since I started my work with him its been a massive changing experience for me. Everything that I have been putting off to deal with has been blown up in my face to stop ignoring but accept it and face it. My life has become better because of him. I am not ashamed of myself anymore because I have no need to be and how honest I am with myself is because of him. I can't lie to him, I can't ignore my own garbage anymore so instead I have learned better ways to open up and deal with things. He has pushed me to be more and helped me know that I am capable of it even if its not easy its something I must do. I also just got a set of runes a few weeks ago and got him to be the one who blessed them.
Outside of the main pantheons, do you work with other types of wights? I am still learning about the wights so I don't work with many however I have started giving offerings to my house wights on the weekends.
Loki, I came to learn what little of know of him though posts much like this one.
How did you come to work with Loki?
I was going though a tough time that lasted roughly a 14 months. I just knew what I knew wasn't helping and whisper his name, and felt something, like be closer to home. Started around Febuary.
In what ways do you include Loki in your practice?
I don't as of yet have any practice. I will soon.
Outside of the main pantheons, do you work with other types of wights?
Not as of yet, curious but still working on the same book for 8 weeks now, I'll get it finished, but I read words like it's a little kid having to eat vegetables. (not here) But it's part of a first goal and promise to myself to complete. Even wrote spells and evoke gods I knew nothing about it. I needed something new, and my way of doing it was not working.
1. I work with Hela the most, also known as simply Hel.
2. I came to work with her, because I had a dream where I waltzing with her, and it sparked my interest to learn more about her specifically. I did a lot of reading, only originally knowing that she was a goddess of the dead. As my reading became full on research I learned that she fit nicely in the ways of the craft that I already practice.
3. I actually began to use her as an altar figure, first, before taking on a method of libation-based prayers. She is not exactly my matron goddess, but I do incorporate her in many things. Whether it simply be a symbol, her name, or thinking of her during something.
4. Depends, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Pinpointing one specific type is a bit tricky, since I usually forget a few days after I've worked with a specific one.

I work mostly with Odin.
I first came to work with him through the berserkergang. Odin helps you with it, and I felt it was only right to honor him. Then I started thinking, and decided I would have him as my main deity.
I include him in my rituals, and I pray to him quite often.
I have not yet felt I had to include wights in my.life.
