You can certainly shield your home from unwanted spiritual and magical intrusions with a wide variety of protection spells. There are many methods all of which are equally valid so it's really a matter of what works best for you.
As for if you could write a spell to prevent breakdowns then I think it varies. Perhaps it might be possible to delay or dissuade mechanical faults but it wont stave it off completely. Ultimately a damaged vehicle is going to pack up the ghost sooner or later and whilst magic may, or may not, help prevent such events from happening I would rely on a mechanic far more than an incantation. If the car is already breaking down repeatedly then the odds are it needs a trip to a garage and I personally doubt that any spell would miraculously fix the problem.

One of the first things many magic users will do is to create wards to prevent negative entities or energies from entering their home. After all, you want your home to be safe, psychically speaking. So it is a good idea to understand how to build effective wards and some of the various methods of achieving effective wards. Here are some sites with good information on this important topic:
You can certainly do both, but magic shields protect against magical and psychic energy, not engines breaking down. So if your engine breaks down purely because technology is bound to let us down with no intervention of magic, the shield obviously won't work.

I ask my deity to be with me as I travel in my van. If it breaks down, I have people that will, and do, help. Hence my deity is still with me. I have things hanging around my home and my car for the purpose of protection. Oh yes, you can protect yourself by putting up wards and protection sigils. When I'm not wearing my pentacle necklace, I hang it up; same with my triquetra necklace. I wear a pentacle ring constantly, along with a ring of a bear paw. I have an eagle feather wrapped in leather and beads that was given to me by an American Indian. Another tribe gave me a combo of owl's foot, feather, and stone as a protection for me. They seem to recognize that I am part native, so I've gotten a few gifts from them.
Oh yes, you can protect yourself, your home, your vehicle from unwanted energies, which is what you want. BB
