What is the difference between "Invoking" and "Evoking"?

Invocation summons angels or summons a force in prayer

Evocation is meant to summon demons

This is in the context Goetian magic which first appeared in the Lesser Key of Solomon in the 17th Century.

I recommend looking up goetia on wikipedia or even just 'invocation' and 'evocation', then go for better sources. With stuff as imprecise as magic, I take good sources very seriously.

Invocation involves calling a spirit or deity into yourself in order to take on certain aspects of said spirit or to commune with them on a deeply personal level. It can also be used during certain sabbats in order for someone to be god/goddess associated with that sabbat to make it a more interesting and fulfilling event.

Evocation means that you call forth a spirit or deity to appear and be among you instead of going into someone. Evocation and invocation can be used to accomplish the same ends, mainly it just depends on your preference. Also it is best to start with evocation until you get familiar with a certain deity then you can start invocation and really connecting with the deity/spirit

so if you invoke a spirit or deity is it possible for them to stay in you for long periods of time?

That's a good question. I haven't come across a definitive answer as to how long a being will stay within you. I guess forever if you gave it the option? Or until they got tired of being in your body which would probably happen sooner than that. Most people only do it for a few minutes.

's answer is probably the best one. My answer was only in a very limited context while their's was more complete and general. It also agrees with everything I've found, so I guess that's probably the final answer to the question

In short words, Evocation is a command. Invocation is a prayer of invitation. I just disagree with cdk is about start with evokation (but this is just my opinion and because in my path we use invocation (as respect for our entity, as teachers and 'friends'. I would find evocation disrespectful and probably I would get problems about "mixing commands".
