Hello Whitney and welcome to SoM! I must say, I am very happy to see a mother and child sharing an interest in magick. Being a father of 3, I know it can sometimes be hard to find common ground but magick is great for closing the gap. If you have any questions or need any help, feel free to mail me.

As for starting out, the previous poster gave a good outline that I want to dive into a bit more specifically. Meditation and grounding is how you will learn to control your energy flow. Once you get used to how your energy flows, you can start doing things with it. Visualization and energy manipulation is taking that control over your energy and using it to affect things around you. Then you start learning about the meanings of colors, symbols, moonphases, etc and how they enhance the abilities of your power.

I hope this helps you and your child get started on your path. If you are looking for books, I suggest Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler and The Inner Temple of Witchcraft by Christopher Penczak. Both are great books for laying the foundations for your magickal future. And like I said, feel free to contact me if you need any help at all.
