For a very long answer that sums up to "maybe"... read on.
There are lots of ways people think they'll be punished for using magickal energies selfishly. Some examples:
Monkey's Paw: You cast a spell to get $200. Your son gets killed in your factory's machinery and the boss pays $200 in 'compensation' for your loss.
Boomerang: Cast a quick spell to distract a wealthy-looking passerby and steal $200 from his pocket. The magickal energy that you put out still has your "signature," however, and because "like attracts like," it tails you like a duckling until finally it catches up. You stand, dazed and spellbound, while some random person steals $200 from your pocket.
Reverse Cosmology: Your lips say "God and Goddess take this gold / and multiply 200-fold" but your psychic body screams "I'm poor! I'm going to end up homeless!" so you've actually cast a 'get poorer' spell.
Loan Sharks: Since the money spell got you $200, the Fates demand that you expend thrice that... ending $400 in debt. (But for a real loanshark, see the Abrahamic God who strikes seven- to tenfold.)
Audit: By avoiding poverty yourself, you've deprived people (who do not know magic,) of wealth that could have gone to them-- and the universe works it out so that you get to know what that feels like after you die.
Revenue Raid: Some time in your next life, your possessions are lost in a fire, valuing $200 that you cast a spell for in a past life.
...Personally, I only consider the more direct consequences.
If you cast a wealth spell, it can manifest in a promotion-- which means more money but also more work.
If you curse someone, you'll just have to live with the fact that you're the kind of person who curses other people.
Simple things like being specific (even if you're not Wiccan, "harm none" can be a good specific to prevent the Monkey's Paw,) 'grounding' the spell after it's done its job (so it won't boomerang,) and approaching spellcasting as a mental discipline (so no reverse cosmology)... are basic skills for any kind of magic.
But if you make yourself an acolyte of certain gods, then you can channel their power but must respect their rules. I think this is where things like the Threefold Law comes in-- when you become subject to the Goddess of three aspects, each of them will work a consequence. Likewise, if you believe in a place of suffering for your sins after you die, or another life where everyone you've wronged gets you back, then you've included yourself in that order. At least that's what I think.
i agree with luzifer. EVen though some stuff might come back at you, do what ever spells you like... there is no line seperating black and white magic. its just what you think is right and wrong to do.
