Dream catchers are fetishes and were made by family members, in Native American cultures, to hang in or over a child's crib or bed to prevent bad dreams. The web catches the bad dreams, while the hole let good dreams through and rain down upon the child (hanging feathers). Bad dreams went into the bead in the middle. When daylight came it burned away the bad dreams, and was ready for its job each night. I have a friend who made one for me, and it hangs above my the headboard of my bed on the wall. It is said to hang it above the one's sleeping place Hope this helps. Blessings and good dreams!
