A common misconception is that people have there very own element. That is not true. People must use all of the elements to live. In magick it helps if you use all of the element.
You cannot "control" any element. You are not going to get any "powers" like shooting fire balls out of you hands. Sorry but that will not happen.
Actually, the idea that you have an Element isn't correct. It's something that Hollywood dreamed up in the movie, The Craft, and someone people latched onto it and it won't go away.
We are not one Element, we are composed of all of the Elements. What we truly want to do is learn to work with all of them in balance. It is true that you may find that one or two of the Elements are initially easier to work with. That isn't because they are "your Elements" but because you need to spend more time and effort learning to work with the others that are more difficult for you.
Nor is it true that "your Element" is the Element of the Sign of the Zodiac in which you were born. Anyone who does astrology can tell you that your birth sign is only a portion of what influences your life. Which Houses the other planets fall in also has great influence. Take myself for instance, I was born in Taurus, which is an Earth sign. But I also have planets that fall under Water, Air, and a lot in Fire. So again...I am not one Element only.
Which Elements you work with also depends in part on which forms of magic you practice. The classic Elements in Western magic are Earth, Air, Wind, and Fire. Some also add the Element of Spirit to that. In Chinese astrology and magic the Elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. That's why it is important to understand what you want to work with and in which system you are working because it changes the perceptions regarding the Elements.
Well, magick isnt about what Hollywood portrays. Yes we have an element but we cant control it. Its against the law of nature. You are no Aang nor Korra to control the 4 elements.
To find your element, I think it depends on what tradition do you believe or follow, but I suggest that you should take a test to know more about your element.
"Your element" is actually all of them. But some are more drawn to certain types of magick; using fire of a candle, using the wind to carry wishes. But we are all and we use all. If you really must have one, most would say its the one you feel closest to. I am Aquarius, so mine is air, according to my sign. But I feel closer to water. In saying that, I don't use just one in doing spells or rituals. I don't think that way. BB
On an astrological standpoint you should go by your zodiac. Each zodiac has a ruling element. Although everyone here has a good point. You can't physically throw flames and whatnot. Its an astral thing. By astral I mean you visualize the element you want to manipulate and give it energy from your own body, also through visualizing it. Like flames for example. I am a Leo so fire is easier for me to work with, although with practice I can now use the others as well. For example, if I want to cast a circle of fire, I visualize energy from my body flowing from me and becoming the element of fire, and form a circle with it. using elements in magic involves visualizing your energy, what element you are using, and what you want to do with it. And as far as finding your element, look at your zodiac. You can flip through any astrological book at a bookstore and these books, as well as any involving magic, in the bookstore's new age section. Although your element will be the easiest for you to use, with practice u can use any and all of them. I do hope I answered your questions and was of some assistance.
We may all have a mix of the elements, but choosing to use only one is a thing and can often become a reflex which leads to only using one which can be your niche element. I for one, choose Shadow and Water over the rest, and use shadow more than water. It's more of a choosing which to do more. I tens to just go with what I believe. If you believe something, stick to it.
