I am sort of new-ish to the whole magick area. Magick has always been so interesting to me because I am not so sure what it can do and if a spell works it is just placebo.
I know that you can't become a mermaid or dragon or whatever but is it really possible to open your third eye, channel energy, see auras etc? I would just like to know the basic things you could do with magick so I don't waste my time trying to learn everything when some things may not be possible.

It is possible to open your third eye, channel energy, see auras...and more. But even in these things you will find false information. Mostly from people who mixed fiction with real things. It happens and is very common since it is very easy for anyone these days to create a professional looking website. So always look for creditable sources. Some books on auras, chakras, witchcraft and energy healing methods (like Reiki) can even be found at your local library. I recommend trying to find books over websites whenever possible. Some publishers like Llewellyn also have articles written by many of the authors they publish on their website - http://www.llewellyn.com/journal/index.php You might want to check those out and read up on topics that interest you.
Iris is spot on. Books on the craft are plentiful and are your best bet in educating yourself. If you don't have a path you can read different types of practices and find what you are drawn towards.
As with any practice, you grown and learn and continue to develop an understanding.
There are plenty of misinformed and under-researched books out there on magic and witchcraft. Most people will tell you to avoid authors like Silver Ravenwolf and DJ Conway, as well as authors that relate everything to wicca. Whatever you end up studying, take everything with a grain of salt and use your common sense.
Magick, as defined by Aliester Crowley, is the art and science of enacting change in accordance with will.
This change isn't so much physical, but mental, emotional, and subtle. Witchcraft is altering fate in your favor, and working with and through the unseen. It works within and along the laws of reality and nature.
So things like physically shapeshifting, flying, throwing fireballs, changing your appearance, etc, are breaking the laws of physics and nature.
However, things like seeing the unseen, enacting changes within yourself and others, altering the perception of people, working with spirits, attracting and banishing things, are all within the laws of nature and unseen.
I prefer to think of it as measurements of possibility, not impossibility.
Even if someone could create a mythical being the amount of skill for that would be extraordinary.
I am fairly certain that if it were possible, the person probably wouldn't be hanging out around a website.
You should think about what is possible for you. Every one has different skill sets. A spell is but a tool. I don't use spells because I find them to be a waste of time. Especially the ones you see in most books. But to others they help them focus. I skip the step of spell and just weave the result.
I am not going to list all of what you can do within the world of the occult. Call it magick, magic, or just call it life. It makes no difference.
What you need to know is what are you capable of? What interests you? What areas do you Want to explore? Why do you want to learn it? Is it for spiritual reasons, unlocking the unknown, power, friends?
