The first thing to learn about spell casting is that it is all entirely subjective and it is not a physical endeavor (though some people like using physical components to help focus). Even if a spell is legitimate in the sense that it's not trying to break the laws of physics, it won't work 100% of the time because it is not something you could isolate and control all of the variables to get the same result each and every time. What works for some people may not work for others, though typically we like to draw the line of what is possible at physics.
There really isn't a reason that "not using technology" is a rule as it is more of a preference. Trial and error helps one understand what works for them and what might not. Could you be looking at it in a way that prevents you from seeing how a spell might work? Could you be doing something to block your own progress? Could you be doing something that you'll find out later isn't really your style? These are all good questions to keep in mind as they are all possibly true for you.
Personally I like having a certain setting and mindset when I work with energy, but this is something I've found out for myself and might not apply to others. When it comes to things like this, it's hard to give advice without feedback. The most anyone could really give you is what we have found affects us and what works for us and you could try keeping some of those things in mind.
