I've been working on it a lot lately, and my chakra alignment in general and had sort of a strange question.
Am I the only one who just doesn't feel rooted by where many sources claim the root chakra is, and instead feel as though it is in their feet and their legs? I've tried several meditative practices that are all the same sit cross-legged and focus on your tail bone area, possibly some chanting involved, but it just doesn't work for me as well as standing or laying on my back with my feet flat on the floor or ground and focusing on my legs and feet by imagining them as stone, or with literal roots coming out and feeding into the ground.
I know if it works, it works, and I'm not going to stop my way of doing it since it does, but is there anyone else who feels or does the same thing or even something different aside from both of those with the root or other chakras?
If not, and if it does not interfere with the system you are learning, consider studying the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
There are many correlations between the Chakra system and the QToL, and both are about (basically) etheric or astral energy systems. The Chakra system is more specific to parts of the body, whereas the ToL is more symbolic.
But I digress. The ToL has a continuation below the root chakra. I will not go into it here, but studying the related traditions may resonate with you.
Israel Regardie goes into depth in his book, The Tree of Life. It may be found online as a pdf, and print volumes may be available depending on how recently it has been printed.

There is a minor chakra in the base of your feet as well. If you don't feel like you're "rooted" when focusing on that particular chakra (the base/root), you could try focusing on the bottoms of your feet and visualizing roots growing from them and "rooting you" to the earth, or placing a smokey quartz or clear quartz between your feet and using that to help ground and "root" you.
Just to expand on what has already been said, the root chakra is indeed normally located at the base of the spine. And the body has several chakras beyond the major seven. Chakras are present at any point where your meridians (paths of flowing energy) come together/cross.
The hands and feet both have chakras in them which act as flow points for moving energy inward and outward as well. The feet generally are more focused on drawing energy, while the hands tend to be more focused on projecting. But they can easily do both.
It may be that you are connecting with that inward/outward flow of energy rather than the presence of your chakra because you seem to be focusing on the act of rooting or connecting your energy to the earth. That kind of visualization tends to be used as a means of balancing your energy by releasing excess and drawing earth-energy up.
If you want to just connect to and work with the root chakra, try moving your attention to its place and visualize it as a slowly turning ball of light, or a point of radiant warmth. Then include that image with the rooting you usually do, connecting to the earth through your feet to that ball of energy for it to be refreshed. This is a good way to have any energy not your own be released and carried away. If you want, you can continue the same visualization all the way up through the other chakras to clear the energy flow between them. I usually focus on the idea of clearing away outside energy and opening the flow between my chakras to allow them to even out and balance with each other.
Considering how you seem to do naturally well with rooting, it might be interesting for you to try a similar visualization upwards (ie; towards the spiritual). Once you have worked your attention through the chakras to your crown set to also extending branches upward. Then visualize the idea of a dual-flow of energy. One coming up from the earth to cycle through your body and then upwards and out through the 'branches'. And a second flow of energy from above to shine into you like sunlight to again cycle through you then downward and out into the earth through your feet. It can make for a potent flow of energy, especially if you have a sacred space to do it in.
