Not sure what this is?

So my mom pointed out this item I've had for 4yrs now and she barely noticed it. It's a semi-translucent glass ball a friend gave to me.I don't know if its for divination. But my mom asked what it was and I told her I didn't know I thought it was decor.

She said it looked like an eye cause if you turn it one way its grey as if it was burnt glass on two sides but if you look at it its semi-clear in the middle. She says its for something. I highly doubt my friend believes in divination and this was given as a b-day gift years ago with random stuff. What do you think its for? Its a shame posting pics on here isn't an option or else I'd show it.

It could be a sphere of one of several semi-precious stones. I'm definitely no gemologist, so the possible names escape me. But I do know some stones have that sort of effect, and might be ground into a sphere to accentuate the appearance.

It might have been made for divination, and if not, it may be usable for the purpose.
